Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Fabric Me! Showing my age, I was named in the era of Debbie Reynolds. Like Jennifer in latter years, Debbie was one of the most common names growing up. My first year of college there were three of us on my dorm floor of 25 or so. I was really glad that my parents did use a more unique spelling!

No meaning for my first name, but my middle name “Louise” is after my aunt. I always hated my middle name growing up, but now I love it.

Fabric Me! My mom really liked the name, but it has no special significance to our family. My mom unknowingly jumped on a trendy bandwagon though…for the last 20 years or so my name has been the number one baby name in the U.S.. I ended up being one of three Emily’s in my class of only 13 for my specialty in college. The name does mean “industrious” or hard-working, which has turned out to be pretty accurate over the years.

FABRIC ME!!! My parents named me after a girl that my mom went to school with. My mom always told me that the girl was beautiful, smart and well-liked; exactly what she wanted for me. They ended up calling me Kimi which has stuck since then. Luckily, they did not name me the female version of my fathers name…. Theodora Roberta… TERRIBLE!

My name means white castle. My dad had a coworker and it was his daughter’s name. My parents like it and voila. My husband and I are expecting our first child and it looks like it will be that easy for us in picking names too. Hope I win – I have a nursery to plan.

My sister and brother both have very unique names but Ashley got really popular. My mom assures me that it wasn’t popular at the time. I really like my name though. It works/fits.

I’m a twin and my twin is male (we’re obviously fraternal twins). I have an older sister so my dad was really wanting a boy. He got his boy and named him Ray…my name “Kay” rhymed with Ray which is how my name was chosen. We are Ray Dean and Kay Lene, and I loved growing up as a twin! Always had a handy playmate around and oh the trouble we got into! :)

My name isn’t unusual but the way I got it is kind of funny. I am the 3rd child, so my folks had trouble deciding on a name. They narrowed it down to about 4 but couldn’t decide which they preferred. Finally they put all of them in a hat and drew one out. Thought that would solve the problem, but then they would look at the name and say…’noooo..let’s pull again!” Each day my dad would come home from the hospital and my siblings would ask if they had named me yet. It took them about 4 days to decide to name me Barbara! (I could have been Gretchen, Mary Jane, or Robin!)

The meaning behind my name is that it means a perfect give (Isaura, not Jessie – Jessie is the nickname). The name also has a special significance. It is a family name it was my great grandmother’s name. My parents named my sister and I after our granmothers – Mine is Isaura Jesusita (my maternal great grandmother’s name as my first and my maternal grandmother’s name as my second (middle name). My sister’s names are the paternal grandmother and great grandmother names.

I like the history we have in our names ;)

My mom was set on Jessica, my dad hated that it would more than likely be shortened to Jessie. He had a thing with unisex names. I was nameless for 48 hours, until a nurse walked into the room to check on my mom. Her name happened to be “Leanne”. My mom fell in love with the uniqueness of it and as the story goes, my dad thought the pretty, perky, young nurse was quite the dish…so he agreed!
