Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Fabric me! Had I been a boy, I’d of been Bo or Clint, so I’m pretty happy my parents ended up with Tracy, which probably is one of the only names they could agree on.

I’m named after my mom’s cousin who I’ve never met :P I hated my name growing up and I had people call me Lisa, Anna, and Rachel at some point. Then my mother told me she really wanted to name me Anita and just didn’t put it on the birth certificate! I used that during high school! I just don’t care anymore.

FABRIC ME! My mom SWEARS she loved the names Laura and Hope for years and years before getting pregnant, but it just so happens that two of the biggest stars of Days of Our Lives in 1977 were Laura and Hope. Laura went to an insane asylum and Hope has died SEVERAL times, but always comes back. Usually with some cosmetic enhancement. I have such amazing namesakes to live up to!

My real name does not have any meaning, but it was picked from one of them Chinese dictionaries or similar because according to the fortune-teller my parents patronised, it would be best to have both characters with 14 strokes each. One of the characters on mine symbolises ‘jade’ (not exactly, but kind of), which is a pretty awesome green jewellery to have.

I used to hate it because I wanted to adopt an English name like my friends, but I grew up loving it and wouldn’t change it for the world now. :)

My name came from a mix of Gone With The Wind and being Irish. Tara is the plantation where Scarlett lived, and it is also a hill in Ireland and apparently the seat of the High King if Ireland… But I think my mom just liked the sound of it :)

When I started dating my husband I had to get admitted into the emergency room and he came looking for me. He gave them my name, Jennifer, but I was admitted under my health card name which is Margaret, he didn’t know I had any other names. He went to 3 hospitals looking for me! I’m a huge fan guys!!

First name is a version of my great-grandfather’s, middle name is my great-grandmother’s and my initials spelled out my other great-grandfather’s nickname.

FABRIC ME! My full first name is Elizabeth but I’ve always been called Libby. My parents wanted me to go by Elizabeth but knew people would shorten it and call Liz, Lizzie or Beth, all of which they didn’t especially care for. So they headed everyone off by providing the nickname Libby, but then everyone ended up using that over Elizabeth as well so I’ve been Libby ever since.

FABRIC ME! It depends on which one of us you ask, but I think my sister got the better name- Kozbi. It’s from a, ahem, a lady of the night in the book of Numbers. That’s a story. She gets a lot of looks and questions but it gets pronounced right. Kara on the other hand is vanilla in comparison (I’m older) and used to get every mispronunciation under the sun.

My name means ‘favor or grace’. One website mentioned it became ‘popular in the 1950s due to Annette Funicello – well that may be true, but I only met one other Annette when I was growing up! Did I mention I disliked it because I could never find a bracelet, pencil, plastic license plate for my bike, or later a key chain with my name on it? Nobody else had that problem :/

My parents (or let’s be honest, it was up to my mom) were between two names still when my mom was in labor. Back then they still had to share rooms at the hospital, so my mom let the other women in her room pick between them. They totally picked the right one.

FABRIC ME! Oh how I want to win this! No special meaning to my name at all. However I recently named my daughter Anna, a name I thought I simply liked out of thin air, and a nice grandma who struck up a conversation with us in line one day said Oh I am reading a book with the main character named Anna! I said Is it Anna Karenina? She goes No, Fifty Shades of Gray! (Oh my, for a grandma to be reading that!) And then I realized I had read that book when I was pregnant, so I think I inadvertantly named my child after a pornographic novel! Oops!
