Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    FABRIC ME!

My name is Mary Katherine but I go by Kate. Mary is a family name on my mom’s side but NO ONE goes by it! Kind of silly. I do not plan on continuing this tradition if I have a daughter one day.

<3 this giveaway.. I could do damage on this fabric site!!

My name was suppose to be Crystal Lee, but when I was born my parent’s said I didn’t look like a Crystal – so they quickly changed my name to Dawn Nicole. Dawn, because I was born at the crack of dawn after my mom spent 30+ hours in labor, and Nicole after my mom’s favorite soap opera actress, who was named Nicole but went by Nikki. I’ve always loved my first name, haven’t met to many other Dawn’s in my life!

    “FABRIC ME!”

I was named after my Greek god mother and never knew there was anything ‘peculiar’ about my name until I moved to Connecticut. On the first day of my junior year of high school, when I was 15, I was made fun of like you wouldn’t believe. It was horrifying. “How could a pale, scrawny, [Irish], white girl be named Letitia?”

Once we all got past that, my name has become quite the ice breaker and a huge form of entertainment. Even to this day when the Starbucks baristas attempt to spell it on my morning coffee. The best has been Loquisha! Hahaha. I always wonder what’s going through their minds as they write that.

My mom said my sister and I got short, easy first names to offset our long, hard to pronounce, Russian last name. As a side note, our son’s name is Lincoln, named after the president – which we thought would be obvious. It’s funny to me how many people ask where we came up with the name. I’m always tempted to respond that we chose it because it sounded more sophisticated than naming him after a Subaru…

FABRIC ME! The name Paige means “young servant”. By dad liked the name because he thought it was a nice southern name. However, my parents couldn’t agree on a name to go with it, and I ended up with the first name Laurel after the city in Maryland where I was born.

FABRIC ME!!! I was supposed to be a boy and my mom didn’t want me to be called junior so they didn’t give me my dad’s name I was going to be Shane. When mom woke up after having me she told my dad (who wasn’t at the hospital when I was born) that I was a really fat bald boy. He said no she is tiny with tons of hair. Confused mom was staring out the window when a robin landed on the sill. She said Robin Rae is a pretty name. Funny enough Robin is actually a nickname for Robert so I ended up a Junior in a way.

My parents said they wanted a “less common” name, so they chose Brandi, and decided to spell it with an “I” instead of a “Y”, to keep it different from the alcohol. I still hear people with the name Brandi, but few are spelled with an I. Oh also did i mention my high school economics teacher used to sing “Brandi..you’re a fine girl…” every time he called roll. Every. Single. Time. Oy! :)
