Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

My name was originally my mother’s birth name, but her adopted parents changed it to something else and my father thought I should now have her original name.

My Mom & her sister’s decided to do something pretty neat with all the female grandchildren’s names. All of our names (either first name or middle name) end in ‘ette’. In total, there are 8 different ‘ette’ names. We’re just glad my Mom’s brother didn’t have a girl because he always joked that if he had a girl her name would be Corvette :)

I was supposed to be Sarah Elizabeth (probably THE most common name of the early 80s), but my mama chose Carrie Jean, perhaps to carry on some maternal name tradition? Mom’s name is Patti Jean and her mother’s name is Barbara Jean. Jean, Jean , JEAN!

Fabric me! I was given my grandfather’s middle name because I was born on his birthday. It was his mother’s (my great-grandmother) maiden name! I hated it growing up and longed for something normal like Jane or Elizabeth. I love how unique it is now, especially since my first name is so common.

My name means clear or light. My mom liked older names and in the 80s only old ladies were named Claire. She had a couple in the bank but saw my little face and decided it was perfect for me. I love her all the more for it, because she chose it.

Turns out, that was his grandmothers name he just didn’t know it! With the next kid, I am going to do a little more “family research”!

My big brother picked my name and I am grateful, because I really like it :)

I realise my parents probably let him pick the name to make him feel involved, but I don’t care – I just love my name, BECAUSE he picked it. My big brother is my hero, always has been and always will be.

In Germany we don’t have middle names the way you have in the US, but a lot of us have two or even more first names! Not all of them are actually used on a daily basis, obviously. So my second name is “Helene”, which is the name of my godmother. I used to … not hate it, but I thought it was a really old fashioned name. A few years ago I felt I would be happier with “Helena”, but now I like “Helene” for its vintagey feel :)

Oh, and thank you so much for making this Fab Freebie available worldwide!

My name means both Peace and Ireland. My Dad always wanted an Erin, and since him and my Mom knew I would be their youngest child, my Mom agreed to the name. When I was a kid, I didn’t like it, but now I totally appreciate it and actually really like it. It is true to my Irish roots and reminds me of my family.
