Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

My parents were looking for a name that wasn’t popular and they landed on Jessica, which happened to be the second most popular name the year I was born. Parental Fail!

Also, I think my dad just secretly really liked the song by the Allman Brothers:)

My story is actually quite interesting, actually. My parents really hoped for a boy after their first daughter, Mary. They were going to name me Joseph because they were convinced I was a boy and thought it would be cute to name them after the Biblical parents of Jesus. They created cards welcoming Joseph and I still find them around the house to this day! In the end, I ended up as a girl and they named me after my grandmother. They also ended up stealing my sister’s middle name and giving it to me as my middle name instead haha.

I love the story behind my name! My mom actually wanted to name me Jolene, but my dad vetoed that–he said it was a “hick name.” I disagree with that, and think it would have been pretty, but c’est la vie. When I was born, my dad was reading a biography of Andrew Jackson. The wife of Jackson’s adopted son, Andrew Jackson Jr., was named Sarah. My dad suggested one of those two names for me. (This stuff is COMPLICATED! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Jackson)

My mom ruled out Rachel, because that was the name of a disliked character on her mother’s favorite soap opera… and she said that if my name was Sarah, it had to be without the “h.”

The story behind my name is my parents were big Beatles fans growing up in England and I was named after a little known song of theirs called “Julia” which was written for John Lennon’s mother. Also I was born in July and so it also fit with the month. I like it. I once had a boyfriend learn the song on guitar and play it for me at my birthday party when I was 15.

My parents named me after a character in the 60’s series “The Avengers” (Tara King) and the little town of Tara, Ontario that they used to drive through on the way to their cottage. People always assumed that it came from “Gone With The Wind” though and I had to explain that, no, I wasn’t named after a house. :p It’s pronounced the “proper” (ie. English) way too! ;)

Sayward is an old Scottish/Celtic name that means of the sea or of the ocean. My mom got the name from a TV mini series that was based off a trilogy of books. I’ve never met another Sayward, but I’ve heard of a few my age and their moms got the name from the same movie. There’s also a Sayward, Canada. I’m dying to go there so I can finally buy stuff with my name on it.

My name at birth was spelled with a “y” but my parents changed it when I was 5 or 6 months old. The justification they gave me is that Kelly can be a boy’s name as well, whereas Kellee apparently can’t? Personally, I think that it was great foresight on their behalf as it kept them from having to buy me the million trinkets with my name on them that everyone else had – Kellee is a tough one to find :)

But not a single day of my life goes by that I don’t have to correct someone for saying “Dana?” My response is generally along the lines of “No, it’s Danna, Like Anna with a D on the front. Or Bandana without the ban.”
