Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

No significance. My parents just liked the way it sounded and had to keep it simple because my maiden name is a mouthful.

I am not sure exactly how my parents picked my name, but they named my brother Karl with a K, and named me Kristina with a K – both names are typically spelled with a C. Maybe they were trying to rebel!?

FABRIC ME! My name isn’t anything special, though I’m always amazed by the many ways that people think are correct when they spell Meredith. I will say, when I was little, I wanted a more common name, but it is nice having a name that isn’t super popular, I guess.

My parents decided to name a girl baby Cory. My mom’s labor with me was difficult and she was out for quite a while. When she waked, she asked my nana, “where is Cory?” My nana said, “who?” Mom: “The baby.” Nana: “I don’t think that’s what Louie named her.”
Dad chose Catha Dawn- neither name was previously discussed. So glad he did. I think a unique name fits me.

In my family, we have alternating names running in the female line: Anna – Valentina – Anna – Valentina, etc. So, my great-grandma’s name is Anna, my grandma is Valentina, my mom is Anna, my name is Valentina and we named our daughter Anna to follow the tradition. This is not a requirement, it’s more of a cool tradition that every generation is free to either continue or not, and so far we have kept it up! Also, my name means strength or health in Latin and I do not wish for any other name.

FABRIC ME! I was supposed to be William Jeffrey; obviously, that didn’t work out (this was waaay before ultrasound, so I’m not sure why they didn’t pick a girl’s name as well). My mother thinks she saw the name Becky in a comic strip. And it is Becky, not Rebecca. I get a lot of, “You were told to put down your given name, not a nickname.” It isn’t a big deal in the South, where my parents are from, because there people have what are considered nicknames as given names. However, I was raised in the Midwest, where that just ISN’T done. My mother was constantly calling my school because a teacher had decided my name was Rebecca and had written it on some form or another.

I’m Hugo the Pug, and my mom and dad actually named me after Hurley “Hugo” Reyes from the hit TV show “LOST”. My mom and dad never watched an episode of “LOST” when it aired but had a “LOST” marathon during the spring of ’10 (watching 6 or 7 episodes a day, staying up to 2am sometimes for “JUST ONE MORE!!!”). When they decided to make me part of their family, they named me after one of their favorite characters.

FABRIC ME! Colleen is an Irish term for Girl. My Dad liked it because it was close to his mother’s name, Eileen. He also didn’t want a name that would probably not be shortened into a nickname. Of course, what does he ended up calling me, “Coll.”

FABRIC ME! There is not meaning behind my name other than the 300 million other Jennifers named in the 1970s — go figure. I can only be thankful my parents did not select the other name they were considering — Henderson — being called Jenny as a nickname is WAY better than the possibility of being called Henny. So Jennifer it is and I think its ready for a comeback in 2013!

FABRIC ME! And no special meaning behind my name, but it is the first one my parents could agree on while going through a baby name book alphabetically. That says a lot about my parents’ marriage – it took until the letter V to agree on anything. And, yes, they’re divorced. :)
