Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    Fabric Me!!

I can’t believe I am admitting this. There are a thousand really beautiful reasons to pick the name Desiree. It’s French. It means desire. It has an accent mark which makes it instantly cool. My parents? They picked it becuase it was a Neil Diamond song.

Not embarrassed for me yet? Let’s take a look at the opening lyrics: “It was the third of June/On that day when I became a man/ At the hands of a girl almost twice my age.”
Any idea who that girl was? Let me point you to the chorus… “oh thank you, Desiree…”

Yup. That’s my namesake. Now just imagine nearly 30 years of awkward moments when my parents sang the song to me. To this day they swear they didn’t understand the underlying message of the song.

No interesting story about my name other than I didn’t have one until we were about to go home from the hospital. My parents almost went with Jessica but my dad didn’t want people calling me “Jessi” because Jesse is a boy’s name. Ah, the 80s. So they settled on Jennifer, the most popular girls name for about 14 straight years. :)

My parents couldn’t decide between two names for my middle name. The story goes that they told the doctor who delivered me and he chose the middle name from the two because it was his daughter’s name. And no, it wasn’t some miracle birth. So I’m kind of named for my mom’s OB’s daughter. And the two creative names they were choosing from? Ann and Lynn. Yes, I’d be happy to trade them for anything!

FABRIC ME! My mom wanted to name me Cara, but shortly before I was born, a family down the street named their newborn exactly that. So an L got added to my name and that’s how I became Carla. Side note, my parents stopped and bought a house on the way home from the hospital with me (which I believe spawned my love of all things home!). We all moved shortly thereafter so I never even lived near the girl named Cara.

FABRIC ME!!! My extremely hippie parents were going to name me “Stella Blue” after a Grateful Dead song. Buuut, the attending nurse said she didn’t like that (so the story goes) and subtly suggested my parents come up with something else. So my name became an homage to my great-grandmothers, Lily and Eva. :D I personally like Stella Blue, but my husband says I would have faded out with the 80s, haha! If you FABRIC ME! I will be reupholstering the rocking chair I got at a garage sale that is in our little boy’s room. Each piece in his nursery was a “find,” lovingly brought back to life from a curbside junking or garage sale!!! Everything in shades of blue, not terribly matchy-matchy, but it all “fits.” Except the rocking chair (currently sporting old damask threadbare red fabric). It is in sore need of a new fabric life – the wood has carved ducks on it, and so I was thinking blue bird (or fowl, if that exists!) fabric would be tres cool! Thanks for the opportunity!!! ~Lila

Until a few years ago, I was researching family history with my grandfather, and it turns out that my great great great grandfather had a little sister named Katie who passed away when she was a baby. Kind of sad, but also kind of cool!

I’m actually named after people, which I always thought was very, very special. My first name is after my great-grandmother and my middle name is after a good friend whom my parents truly adored. How amazing is it to have so much love and respect for a friend that you name your child after that person?! And, he was the nicest man. Truly, a beautiful soul who really loved my parents and me.

My name was to be Chris no matter if I was a boy or a girl. On my father’s side there are several men named Christian and several women named Christina. What is funny is that my parents were in their 40’s when they had me. Evidently they were tired of coming up with names, so they left naming me to my sister (who was in high school at the time). She did a bunch of research (that is her thing) and came up with this family name. So Christina it is! (And Chris… and Chrissy…)
