After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!
I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. Desiree says
Fabric Me!!
I can’t believe I am admitting this. There are a thousand really beautiful reasons to pick the name Desiree. It’s French. It means desire. It has an accent mark which makes it instantly cool. My parents? They picked it becuase it was a Neil Diamond song.
Not embarrassed for me yet? Let’s take a look at the opening lyrics: “It was the third of June/On that day when I became a man/ At the hands of a girl almost twice my age.”
Any idea who that girl was? Let me point you to the chorus… “oh thank you, Desiree…”
Yup. That’s my namesake. Now just imagine nearly 30 years of awkward moments when my parents sang the song to me. To this day they swear they didn’t understand the underlying message of the song.

FABRIC ME!
My mom just loved the name, no big story behind it. I was never really a fan (there were 5 different Sarahs in school) but I don’t much mind it now.
sheela says
Fabric me!
My name means good character!
Jessica says
Fabric Me!!! My name has no significance. haha. Just another name that started with “J” like my siblings. My little sister though, my mom was in such a drug induced state when she was born, my mom spelled my sister’s name wrong. It is Jeneatte instead of Jeanette
Nancy says
FABRIC ME!
My name was a random choice I think. My older sister got a family name, my younger brother got a family name- Middle child me got something completely random!
Cait B says
PLEASE FABRIC ME!
got a new sewing machine for Christmas that is begging for projects :)
Jennifer says
FABRIC ME!
No interesting story about my name other than I didn’t have one until we were about to go home from the hospital. My parents almost went with Jessica but my dad didn’t want people calling me “Jessi” because Jesse is a boy’s name. Ah, the 80s. So they settled on Jennifer, the most popular girls name for about 14 straight years. :)
Susan says
Fabric me!
My parents couldn’t decide between two names for my middle name. The story goes that they told the doctor who delivered me and he chose the middle name from the two because it was his daughter’s name. And no, it wasn’t some miracle birth. So I’m kind of named for my mom’s OB’s daughter. And the two creative names they were choosing from? Ann and Lynn. Yes, I’d be happy to trade them for anything!
LD says
FABRIC ME!!! My brother named me.
Dawn says
FABRIC ME!!
My name means ‘break of day’ or ‘praise him in the morning’!
Carla says
FABRIC ME! My mom wanted to name me Cara, but shortly before I was born, a family down the street named their newborn exactly that. So an L got added to my name and that’s how I became Carla. Side note, my parents stopped and bought a house on the way home from the hospital with me (which I believe spawned my love of all things home!). We all moved shortly thereafter so I never even lived near the girl named Cara.
Selma says
FABRIC ME!
I was named after my mother’s aunt who passed away when she was 19. It means peace.
Ann Marie says
FABRIC ME!
No strange story. I was named (middle name) after my mother, grandmother, great grandmother, etc. They stuck the Ann on the front to differentiate. Wow. That story was even more boring as a typed it.
Lindsey says
FABRIC ME! My name means addicted to fabric…. Kidding :) No cool name story, but a definite fabric addiction.
Mandi says
Fabric me! My name, Amanda, means beloved. My parents chose it because my brother’s name is Zac and they wanted an A and a Z name. But I secretly think that they really just like Barry Manilow…
Angie says
FABRIC ME!!!! My grandmother wanted to name me Angel, but my mother jus couldn’t image any child of hers to be an angel, so they selled on Angela. My mom was right I’m no Angel!!!:)
jenn0021 says
FABRIC ME!
My name is Jennifer and I’m pretty sure it has no special meaning, my mom just liked it. I think she read it in a book somewhere or something. I’ve never wished it to be something else, I really like it. It’s versatile. I can go by Jenn, Jenna, Jennie, and Jennifer. I love it.
Holly Streicher says
FABRIC ME…PLEASE!
My name was one that my parents always liked but never felt right using it for my older sisters. When I was born in December, I guess they finally felt like they could pull the trigger.
Susan says
FABRIC ME!!! My mom named me after her friend growing up – it means Lily which was also her favorite flower! Hope to use this $$$ towards fabrics in our new home!
Cassidy says
Fabric me!
I like to tell people my parents were Dead Heads and named me after the Grateful Dead song, Cassidy. However, my parents were not Dead Heads …
Deborah says
Fabric Me!
I don’t have any significance to my name. I do go by Debbie, and growing up I didn’t like my name. At one point, my siblings called me Dweebie! That and all the Debbie does jokes…ugh! As an adult, I’m at peace with my name:)
Lila Eve Rose says
FABRIC ME!!! My extremely hippie parents were going to name me “Stella Blue” after a Grateful Dead song. Buuut, the attending nurse said she didn’t like that (so the story goes) and subtly suggested my parents come up with something else. So my name became an homage to my great-grandmothers, Lily and Eva. :D I personally like Stella Blue, but my husband says I would have faded out with the 80s, haha! If you FABRIC ME! I will be reupholstering the rocking chair I got at a garage sale that is in our little boy’s room. Each piece in his nursery was a “find,” lovingly brought back to life from a curbside junking or garage sale!!! Everything in shades of blue, not terribly matchy-matchy, but it all “fits.” Except the rocking chair (currently sporting old damask threadbare red fabric). It is in sore need of a new fabric life – the wood has carved ducks on it, and so I was thinking blue bird (or fowl, if that exists!) fabric would be tres cool! Thanks for the opportunity!!! ~Lila
janne says
FABRIC ME
Here in Denmark my name is a girls name,
in Sweden it´s given to boys.
Sarah says
FABRIC ME! I was going to be Emily or Rachel but two cousins were named that about 6 months before my birth, so Sarah was the runner up.
Kate says
FABRIC ME!
I was named Katherine after a grandmother. A few nicknames later, Kate is what stuck.
Amanda says
Fabric Me! I am no idea why my parents chose my name but my middle name is the same as my momma’s!
Katie says
FABRIC ME!
My parents chose my name because they liked it. Katie isn’t short for Katherine either, just Katie. They didn’t know it had a special meaning.
Until a few years ago, I was researching family history with my grandfather, and it turns out that my great great great grandfather had a little sister named Katie who passed away when she was a baby. Kind of sad, but also kind of cool!
Emily says
FABRIC ME!
My mom used to tell me that my name came from the first initials of her name and my dad’s name – Edward & Mimi. Not sure if that’s really true, but I like it!
Sarah says
FABRIC ME!
I wasn’t named after anyone in particular, but after years of cursing my mother for naming me such a common name, she adamantly insists that at the time (1984), it WASN’T that common a name… yet I ended up being in the same class with 3 other Sara(h)s all through grade school. Nice try, Mom!
Emily says
FABRIC ME!
I’m actually named after people, which I always thought was very, very special. My first name is after my great-grandmother and my middle name is after a good friend whom my parents truly adored. How amazing is it to have so much love and respect for a friend that you name your child after that person?! And, he was the nicest man. Truly, a beautiful soul who really loved my parents and me.
Chris says
Fabric Me!
My name was to be Chris no matter if I was a boy or a girl. On my father’s side there are several men named Christian and several women named Christina. What is funny is that my parents were in their 40’s when they had me. Evidently they were tired of coming up with names, so they left naming me to my sister (who was in high school at the time). She did a bunch of research (that is her thing) and came up with this family name. So Christina it is! (And Chris… and Chrissy…)
Katherine Victoria says
My mom named me after Katherine the Great- before she realized what a bloody legacy she had. She just thought she was a great female leader!
Laura says
FABRIC ME! My mother was an English & Literature teacher. She named me Laura after Laura Ingalls Wilder from Little House on the Prairie. :-)
Jenn P says
FABRIC ME!
My parents had a names that start with ‘J’ thing going so, as the youngest of three, that’s how my name was determined.
Kelli says
FABRIC ME!
Kelli means Warrior Woman or lively and aggressive… pretty accurate. What I found out recently, though, is pretty funny and way too accurate. Many people call me Kel for short. Well, it apparently means “white” in African, and since I’m so pastey that I’m practically transparent, it fits!
Jennie says
FABRIC ME!
My mother was reading a biography on Winston Churchill and liked the spelling of his mothers name. I like it too, but I do always have to remind people my full name is not Jennifer.
Heather M says
FABRIC ME!
My mom thought I was going to be a boy and my name was going to be Ryan. Of course I turned out to be a girl and my dad was in LOVE with Heather Locklear and thats how I got my name. My mom said she didn’t think of girls names…lol…so dad got to choose.
Jenny says
Fabric Me! My mom named me, and my dad named my twin sister. And I got my mom’s middle name. My sister didn’t get anyone’s middle name :)
Katie says
FABRIC ME!
I’m Katherine (Katie) and I’m the third one in my family. My middle name is Elizabeth – same as my grandma.
Gina says
FABRIC ME!
My mom didn’t ever want me to have a nickname so she chose a random short name from a book. So personal, I know. ;)
Aubrey says
FABRIC ME!!!!
I am named after a song by Bread called “Aubrey”. I get called Audrey all the time though!
Jen says
FABRIC ME! I could have been an Ida so Jen will work just fine.
Amelia says
FABRIC ME! My parents chose my name because they liked the way it sounds and they didn’t know any nick names for it. After telling the family my name, my aunt visited the hospital and brought an Amelia Bedelia book.
Allison R says
FABRIC ME!
My aunt’s name is Alice, and since she and my uncle couldn’t have kids, my Mom named me after her and him(my middle name is Richelle after his Richard). I still think that was a pretty sweet thing my mom did for them.
TeresaM says
FABRIC ME! I was named after my grandmothers – Helen Teresa and Marianne.
Anna says
Fabric me !!
Marisa says
Fabric Me!
My mom saw an ad in a magazine for the womens clothing line, Marisa Christina… it ended up working perfectly to compliment my maternal grnadmother’s name, Mary and my paternal grandmother’s name, Maria.
Kasey Befeler says
FABRIC ME! My real name is Kathryn after my Grandma, but from the minute I was born I was Kasey. I actually considered changing my name to actually be Kasey, just to make my life easier!! It’s a huge pain sometimes.
Lisa says
FABRIC ME! No exciting meaning behind my name, my parents just liked it.
Joanne says
FABRIC ME!!!! I was named after my father, Joe.
