Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

FABRIC ME!!!!! My name means “Irish girl” or “Irish princess”. My mom found out she was pregnant with me when they were vacationing in California. During this same trip, they saw their “dream home” on a street named Colleen Court. When I was born, my dad wanted to name me Jennifer. My mom, opposed, took one look at me and said “she’s not a Jennifer.” After a day of deliberating, they agreed Colleen was more fitting since I was Irish (obvious) and their “real” dream. Alright, that’s the version I like better – my dad reminds me all the time (25+ years later) I was the closest to the dream house they could get; and now he’s stuck with me and a constant reminder of that house. Thanks dad, love you too.

As I understand, my mother didn’t really have a name for me, so my Grandmother suggested Nicole “because it’s so popular now”. Great way to pick a name, huh! Although, honestly, I don’t meet a ton of Nicoles, so how popular was it really?

FABRIC ME! My parents only objective (besides agreeing) was it had to be a name not yet used in our family. It was this or Victoria (or Anthony if I was a boy). Im definitely glad they picked Elizabeth over Victoria. Isnt it obvious my dad is an English teacher? Those girls name are so ‘literature’ to me.

I was named after my dad’s grandmother. Although, he gave me the wrong middle name (and didn’t know it until he called his mom to tell her that I was born). Ink was already dry on the birth certificate- so I am half-named after someone. The other half is all me :)

I’m Spanish and here is very common to use Latin names. Mine means ‘victorious’ (crowned with laurel leaves) as in ancient Greece people are the victorious honorably crowned with a laurel wreath, this tradition was adopted by the Romans who called Laurea to the laurel wreath.
In Greek the equivalent name is Daphne (both meaning ‘laurel’).

So I’m named after my great grandmother who was an inspiration to my mother. I’ve heard her spirit is always around me. I would never ever change my name, I actually like it! I wish I was given a middle name, but I took care of that when I was 6… I gave myself the middle name: Pond.

Officially, I think it is supposed to mean dark, brown hair.(BORING)
My parents chose it from the lady who sang, “I’ve got a brand new pair of roller skates, you got a brand new key…”(EMBARRASSING)

I prefer to tell people I’m named after the ever-so-kind & gracious, and coincidentally incredibly beautiful, character from Gone With the Wind. :)

By the time I was born, my uncle and his wife had divorced, and my mom realized she didn’t care what that person thought. I think it’s a pretty good name, personally.

FABRIC ME! My parents were surprised when, two months before the due date, they found out there were two babies…yep, twins. They were even more surprised when we were born that the names they’d chosen–Alan and Andy–were inappropriate. They had two girls, not boys, as the doctor had told them. So after a few days of “Baby A” and “Baby B,” we were deemed Amy and Emily.

I am named after my Ukrainian grandmother. In school, some of my teachers had a hard time pronouncing my name, and people kept trying to give me an easy nickname, which was really annoying. A friend picked the name after watching “10 Things I Hate About You” and even though I fought it for a couple of years, the nickname stuck.
