Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Named after relatives from the “old country”.

When we were determining our youngest son’s name, one of his brothers(age 4) suggested “Gloppy”.
    We named him Andrew. :)

Well, one of my granfather’s was named Robert and the other was Ben. My parents were expecting a boy and thought to honor them both with Robin. When I arrived instad, they changed it up with a y instead – I suppose they thought that was girly.

    FABRIC ME!!

My parents had only a boys name picked out (this was before ultrasounds to confirm gender) and my mom was so determined she was having a boy, that she wouldn’t even pick a girl’s name! So when I popped out a girl, they just changed the boys name to the female version . . .
    Christopher Michael = Christie Michelle
And then she proceeded to call me Michelle, so that teachers and doctors (and pretty much everyone else) would be confused for the rest of my life. ha!!

My name has no meaning sadly. My parents could never agree so I think this was their truce name. I don’t have a middle name (pretty unusual in Australia) as I think just agreeing on the first name was tough enough.

FABRIC ME! My name was chosen because my parents both loved it (along with a TON of other parents that year). My sister, who came along 18 months later, is named Grace, which I’ve always been a little jealous of because it’s more unique, at least among people our age. Sarah is probably less popular than Grace on the playground these days though!

I have my creative writing students respond to this prompt when they are studying memoirs!

My full name is Cynthia, but people call me Cyndi. I was named after my father’s cousin. When I was born, my dad said I looked like a salami (all red I guess) and for a while, my older sister called me Cyndi-Salami. In grade school, the kids would call me Little Cyndi Loo Who. My grandma used to call me Cynthia when I was in trouble.

My name has a bit of a cute story behind it. While trying to think of a spelling for Meagan, my mom imagined my name as the byline of a NYT article. Unfortunately I’m not a huge fan of writing so that probably won’t happen, but you never know!

The other funny story was that my name was almost Susan Marie but my mom didn’t want my initials to be SML, aka “small, medium, large’ — haha!
