Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

I’m the only kid in my family (of 6) to not have family name, but I’ve always been pleased with it. It’s easy to say and spell, but still unique enough that when I hear it, someone’s usually speaking to me.

Fabric Me!! My name has an unusual spelling that most Americans have trouble with for some reason. It Nichola, which sounds like Nicholas but without the final S, but 90% of people say N-itch-ola. Even my in-laws now call me Nicky because after 22 years of marriage they haven’t mastered it either !!

My name is Elyse. My Great Grandma’s name was legally Elsie…she hated it and stared going by Elyse instead. The funny thing is, people mispronounce my name frequently and call me Elsie…like the cow from the 1940’s milk adds.

    Fabric Me!

My parents lived and worked in NYC with their families when they married in 1940. My mother’s boss read the wedding announcements every Monday. If one of his female employees got married, she lost her job! So my parents went to Virginia one Friday, got married, and spent the weekend as their honeymoom. Back at work, my mother could only take the pressure of her lie for a few weeks before she quit that job – and soon got another!

There’s no special meaning behind my name except that it represents comprimise (my parents couldn’t agree on either of their first several choices). But my name suits me great, so it worked out – marital sacrifice at its best.

My name was Kelly Karen, Kelly cause they liked it (mid-70s of course) and Karen for my aunt. I hated having two of my initials be KK, so when I got married I dropped the Karen and kept my maiden name for my middle. I also named my first daughter with my maiden name for her middle and we picked my mother in law’s maiden name for our second daughter’s middle name. I love picking names!

Technically, I am named after my dad. He was born Kelly Dean. However, after 6 months of being harrassed by her mother (Great Gram thought that Kelly was a girl’s name), my dad’s mom crossed out Kelly Dean on the Birth Certificate and wrote Dean Randall. So today my dad’s name is Dean, but my parents knew that whether they had a boy or girl (me) they would name their first born Kelly. I LOVE the story behind my name. I take great pride being named after my dad.

FABRIC ME! I’ve recently taught myself to sew and would love to make some new curtains to spice up the house.

When I was born, my dad wanted to name me Penny — but my grandma came in and said that people would be asking me for nickels and dimes my whole life. So, when the Dr. said they couldn’t take me home until I had a name — my parents settled on Melissa Ann (Ann being named after my grandma and my mom).
