Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

I’m named after my grandmother – Ellen, very English, the common nickname for this name was Nellie which I have never been called. When I was a kid I wanted to be called Beverley after an older ‘teenager’ from California who was cool in everyway!

My family, both on the Italian side and the Polish/Swedish side, carries variations of names down through the generations. I have a great Aunt Laurel, one second cousin who’s name is Laurie, and one third cousin who’s name is Lori. I’ve always liked my name because it wasn’t very common. Also, the gap between my two front teeth is similar to that of Lauren Hutton’s, so I always had a fondness for her since we had SO much in common!

Anna was my grandmother’s name and Lee is my mother’s middle name (as well as the middle name of all of her brothers and sisters). I’ve never wished for my name to be different, except for the times it was spelled wrong on a birthday cake….I’ve gotten Anna Lee, Anna Leigh, and even Anna Kate! :)

I was named after Tsarina Alexandra, but have always been called Alex. I switched it to Alix in grade school because I thought it looked much more feminine, and later found out that’s how she shortened her name, too!

I am the oldest of 3 and when my parents were married my dad said he wanted 5 kids and his eldest daughter he wanted to name Crystal. After I was born he told my mom maybe he just wanted 3 and after my sister, Stacey, was born he said ….maybe just 2! haha My brother was born 13 years after my sister, so he was a little bit of a surprise. Anyway, my name had been planned by my dad since before my parents ever married.

I’m not sure about any cool stories, but I have a tape of me threatening my mother with a butter knife when I was about 4 demanding to know,”I hate that name, What’d you give me that name for, huh?” Yea, apparently I was totally out of control.

My middle name~ Kaye is my mother’s middle name (minus the e) and she was named after her uncle Loderick Kay. (wow) He was named for his uncle and so on. . .I have passed the Kaye on to my daughter and hopefully she will continue the tradition, keeping the ‘e’ of course ’cause it’s prettier *:o)

My name (first and last) comes from my grandmother on my Dad’s side. I also have a niece by the same name, so we have three generations of same first/last … A little unusual on the female side ;) And, oh, we don’t use the Roman numerals after our names ;)
