Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

FABRIC ME! NOthing special about my name, but my kids’ names are family names. My daughter’s name is my maiden name and my son’s name is my mother-in-law’s maiden name.

Fabric me! Pretty please. Nashreen can be traced back to the Persians and means wild rose. My mother wanted continuity from my grandfathers name, a reminder, Nashir. To be honest I detested it growing up because it was likened to Gnasher from Denis the Menace and that was my name for a good 6 years in school! I’ve grown into it and have grown to love it now though! :)

I picked my own name when I went away to college, because my given name “Dagmar” sounded klunky to me around all the Jennies and Sarahs and Maryannes. But later, when it came to naming my own daughters, I went to quite a lot of trouble to find unique names for each of them. One of them is named Gwyneth, because although I had heard of G Paltrow I underestimated her rise to stardom. Oh well.

No fun stories about my name but I have grown up repeatedly hearing the uproarious stories about how my parents ended up with my sister’s name. Apparently they used up all their creativity on her :0p

My mother named me after herself because she always loved her name! She and my dad had another name in mind but when I arrived she was all alone and he was stationed in the Phillipines (Air Force). She decided since she was alone she could name me whatever she wanted! LOL

my first name is after a character on All My Children. I was going to be Dana, Danielle or Devon. Im glad Im Devon, now, but Ive not always loved it. My whole life it has been mispronounced :)
I googled the All My Children character named Devon and she was pretty insignificant, as in, she didnt appear much. But I guess she made a lasting impression on my mom, ha :)

the first half of my name came from my great-grandmama. My parents liked it and decided to stick a few letters on the end and <>! In my life I’ve come across a rare few with the same name (nothing new under the sun). It’s kind of annoying, though, when looking for kitschy monogrammed souvenirs. haha

My birth name is spelled Tracy. Throughout high school I would try various spellings of my name: ie…ee…ey…hated them all until a friend of mine also named Tracy told me that she had a friend named Tracye, who spelled it T R A C Y E and a light bulb went off. Fireworks imploded. Ever since the 12th grade one thousand years ago, this has been the way I’ve spelled my name.

And there was peace in the Kingdom :)

I was supposed to be named Andrea, but my Mom overruled my Dad. She just always liked the name, so no real story behind it. Always wished I had a different name, but at least, no one else in my class had the same name as me growing up. Fun fact: while in Pottery Barn Kids a few weeks ago, I saw the name on one of the store shelves spelled as “Darcy”, so I wonder if it will become an envogue name?!?! LOL
