Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

My name is Devorah Rachel, named after my two great grandmothers. My dad’s grandfather was still alive when I was born, and his wife Devorah died in the year before I was born, so he loved that I was named after her.

My parents liked both Laura and Lauren but couldn’t agree. While my mom was knocked out from c-section, my dad told the nurse my name was Laura. There were no hard feelings, but funny story about my dad’s sneakiness! Glad to be a Laura though!

Please do! This is Sapna from India and my name means “dream” in Hindi, one of the most widely spoken languages in India. I was named Sapna after the leading character in a blockbuster film that had released a little before I was born; it was a suggestion from my aunt. In fact 3 suggestions came in, chits were prepared and 1 picked, and thats how my name came to be.

Well, Claudia means “the lame one”; pretty, huh?! In school I didn’t dare to tell anyone. But still, my name derrives from the ancient Roman male name Claudius, so it is well over 2000 years old which is pretty cool!

    her name was sylvia kristel.

and i’ve never wanted to know more than that, i already wish my mother hadn’t told me that. it’s really upsetting to think of how my parents came to choose the name. ew.

So, my mom claims (I don’t believe her) that they didn’t have a name for me. I was Baby Girl Johnson for 2 weeks after I was born (that is true). Then one spring day, a robin landed on her window as she was holding me, and she just knew that was my name. Up to that point, I was going to be Melissa.

That just seems a little too “snow white” for my taste!!! But my mom has stuck to that story for 44 years!

Fabric Me! My name doesn’t have a super exciting meaning, although I do like the meaning (consecrated to God). My mom had me by c-section and was on so many drugs afterward that she accidentally named me the exact same name as her cousin had named her daughter only a few months before. So I was destined to forever be Lisa Marie #2 at family reunions!

My name is from a Shakespeare play called Cymbeline. I’ve always been a bit peeved that I wasn’t named after the main character and lets face it, Cymbeline sounded much prettier. Found out last year at the tender age of (‘cough’) 29, that Cymbeline was actually a man. Imogen it is!

While the story behind my name isn’t all that exciting (I’m named Grace after my maternal great-grandmother), my grandfather freaked out when they told him, insisting that they couldn’t possibly name me that because I would get made fun of. It turns out he thought they said “Grapie” instead of “Gracie”. Fortunately, that isn’t my name; unfortunately, it has been my nickname ever since. :)

Okay, so my story is kind of funny… I’m named after Burger King.

    No, really.

My dad was part-owner of five burger kings in the state I grew up in and my mom & him met while working with the company… so my dad wanted my initials to be BKR so they’d be the same as Burger King Restaurants. So, I got the name Brittany Kristine (and my maiden last name begins with an R).

When I was really little, I LOVED telling the story about my name, thought it was the coolest thing ever. But as a teenager it embarrassed me to no end. Now I can see the humor behind it and understand that my parents did it because of sentimental reasons… Plus, now I’m married… so it’s a bit different :)
