Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    Fabric Me, Please!

No meaning behind my name. Had I been a boy, I would be Michael Joseph. My middle name is my aunt’s middle name – other than that, nada!

    Supposedly my name means “light.”
When I was little, I wished I’d been named Cynthia, rather than Cindy. I thought it sounded more sophisticated, and worried that it would be weird to be an old lady named Cindy. I eventually got over it. ;)

My mom chose the name Stephanie because of a Shoppers Drug Mart commercial that featured a high-powered and beautiful executive named Stephanie addressing a room in some kind of board meeting. Despite the origin I have always liked it and thought it suited me well. :)

Ha! I just read another person named Ashley after a soap opera star… I say ditto (and since we know how popular the name got, I don’t think that we are the only 2). Even though it’s common, I have never disliked it. But man, when it comes to naming your kid, it’s crazy to pick something so permanent!

FABRIC ME!! I love that cherry-blossom print! I actually love my name (I’m named after my aunt) because it’s old-fashioned enough to be rare, but not too weird. I almost never met other Margarets my age, which was nice. I pitied the Jessicas and Ashleys who had to share their name with other girls. :-)

My first name was after an aunt but my middle name was a bit of a muddle. My father registered my name and left the last “e” off the end so I have been “Lynell” all my life and often have people ask if it’s pronounced “li” “nil”..hmmm, my mother thought it was a lovely Frenchy variation on her name Lynne.

My dad’s name is Bryan and he was in charge of naming me. He came across “Bryna” in a baby book and the rest is history. It is pronounced like Renee with a B at the beginning. It is frustrating having to correct people in how to say it, but I do like that I have a unique name.

I’m not sure if there is any story behind my name really, except my parents liked it and it’s Hebrew, meaning “God’s Vinyard” which fitted in with my Catholic background. I didn’t really like it, growing up, but it has grown on my over the years. I like that it isn’t common but not so rare that it could be made up. It’s interesting, without being “frilly”.

All of my siblings and I have family names and I LOVE it! My daughter is the 8th Catherine Hope in my family. Women’s names so often get lost in generational traditions and I am thrilled to cary on the tradition.

Apparently, Waylon Jennings, Buddy Holly, and King Curtis sang a song called “Jolie Blon” in 1958, that some people thought was “Jodi Blonde”. So my mom named me Jodi, after her younger sister’s nickname! And I was always my Aunt Darlene’s favorite…of course! :)
