Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Fabric me! My name is Irish after Irish background on my paternal grandpa’s side of the family. He was adopted and knew very little about his heritage, other than from Irish descendants. I’ve always loved my name; as did my grandpa — he passed away before my 2nd birthday and loved me from day one!

My parents originally chose Katherine, but then discovered the name Caitlin, Katelyn, etc, in a baby name book. In 1978 the name was still unique. My parents had never heard it before, so I like to think that I was among the first of the Kaetlyns;) As for the wackadoo spelling, my mom (who has gorgeous penmanship) practiced writing out different versions until she hit on one that she found to be the most aesthetically pleasing.

Fabric Me! My parents have a tradition to let their parents choose the name, so I was given two unfortunate names, so they named me Deborah as my first name because they liked it, and the other two a middle names. Thankfully, they didn’t pass on that tradition to us and we chose our own kids names!

If you asked my mom, she would tell you a sweet story about how I’m named after my grandfather–Jesse.

My father, on the hand, seems to remember to agreeing to the name because he was quite keen on Katherine Helmond’s character, Jessica Tate on Soap. Otherwise known more commonly to me as Mona from Who’s the Boss.

Needless to say, I tell people my mom’s version of the story.

FABRIC ME!! My first name is just a name my parents like, but my maiden name ‘Hatfield’ has historical significance. I’m a direct descendant of the famed Hatfields’ from the Hatfield and McCoy feud in WV/Kentucky. I’ve always lived in WV so I was constantly asked if I was related, which was fun! (P.S. My grandmother died a McCoy!)

Oh please, FABRIC ME….my name is Corrie. It has no special meaning other than my mother really wanted me to have an alliterative name and my maiden name started with a “K.” My new surname starts with a G and she put in a vote for me to name my son “Gordy” for the same reason. My son is not named Gordy.

My mom picked my name from a song, I think.
I’m ever so grateful that she gave me a less common name and yet it’s not totally wack-a-do (unlike some friends who named their girl Fern. I may only ever refer to the poor kid as Ferngully).
Also THANK YOU $herdog! I’m completely obsessed with Thrift Store (HOW did I miss that memo?!?) and dragging a couple girlfriends thrifting on my bday on Friday. I will not commit to only spending $20. And I’ll refrain from switching pricing tags, too.

The second E is silent. It’s there for the Spanish pronunciation. It used to drive me crazy so in high school I started dropping it just to Bernice so people would stop calling me Berry-nice. It didn’t work. Lol!

I was named after Amy in Little Women. My middle name is May, which was my Nana’s middle name. Coincidental (or not…parents???) my first name and middle name have the same letters, just rearranged. I always joked that I needed to marry Mr. Yam so that my name would be Amy May Yam – same three letters for all three names and my initials would spell AMY. Alas, I married a wonderful man who is not Mr. Yam.
