Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    FABRIC ME!

All I know is my parents went against the double “L” spelling of my name because they were convinced my grandpa would then pronounce my name all-ison. Also, when I was 4 I definitely wanted to change my name to Crystal Princess. Oy ve.

My name is Stephanie but apparently for 9 months, I was Jennifer. My parents never even had Stephanie in mind, but when my mom looked at me, she said I was a Stephanie. Go figure :)

    FABRIC ME!

My mother had originally decided to name me Stephanie but my father didn’t agree and didn’t like it. His best suggestion was Stevie (yes, after Stevie Nicks). My mother didn’t agree with that either but after glancing at a baby book full of names they saw “Rachelle” and decided to go with that. It’s pronounced Ra-shell. I got lucky – I think my name is beautiful! Better than Stevie, at least (no offense to any ladies named Stevie out there)!

My name is Karen. Boring old Karen. What I WISH is that my parents had stuck with my nickname: Charlie. The story goes that when I was born, my Dad was convinced I was going to be a boy, and said “there’s Charlie!”. So my entire family called me Charlie…up until I went to school and the whole thing became confusing. I had no idea my name was Karen. Teachers had no idea my name was Charlie. So, sadly, my family dropped my nickname. :-( I have ONE brother in law that still calls me Charlie and I love him for that!

I was named after a girl my mom taught. My husband’s name is Mike so since we had two of the most popular names of the late 70’s and early 80’s, we made sure our daughter’s names were not in the top 20.

FABRIC ME! My parents just found the name in a baby book and liked it…and for most of my childhood mid 70s to late 80s it was fairly rare (I thought), then when I was a camp counsellor in the early 90s there were 9 girls called Megan (or Meghan, or Meighan, or Meganne, etc.) in our group of 80 or so kids!

The short history behind my name is that I was named after my father whose name is David. But the truth is I was named Vida, Spanish for “life”, when I was born. Over time my parents started using Davida instead. We had it legally changed when I was 15. My family and the friends I’ve had the longest still call me Vida, though.

Nothing special behind the name, mom just liked it. When I was growing up I didn’t like it because I never got pencils or anything with my name on it and NO ONE can spell it. Now, I love it and wouldn’t change it for anything, it is unique and special. I swore I would never name my kids with unusual names but I did…oops!

It means “keeper of the ledge estate.” But I’ve updated it and say it means “Livin on the edge.” It is hugely significant. I was named for my maternal grandmother. Grandma Shelby just passed away after a short battle with cancer. I always loved sharing my name with her. It’s even more special now that’s she’s gone.
