Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Fabric Me!! My name means peace. I’m not sure exactly why my parents picked that name. Just know that it was between Erin or Leah and they chose Erin (obviously).

My name is special because my dad convinced my mom that Rebecca was better than naming me Shilo….after the Neil Diamond song. LOL

    FABRIC ME!

I believe my name means “Star” in Russian, which I am not (a star OR Russian). I was born at the end of the 60s, so Dr. Zhivago was big, plus my Grandmother was a Laura. Mom told me I was almost a Marla Michelle, but saw “Lara” on a box of crackers. (I’m pretty sure she saw “Laura Lynn” food products, but she can’t really remember.)

Fabric me, I need some curtains!

Originally, my name was supposed to be Cassandra (Casey for short). As they were wheeling my mom into the Delivery room after 18 hours of labor, she reached up, grabbed my father by the collar and said, “WE’RE CALLING HER AMBER.”

    “Yes, dear.”

    Smart man.

Erica means brave, which probably isn’t how too many people would describe me. :) My mom chose my name because while she was pregnant she watched All My Children (I think that’s the right one), and really liked the character Erica Kane’s name. I don’t think she was a very savory character, but I’ve always liked my name so I’m glad my parents went that direction!

My name is Saalini and it means Modesty. It’s Indian. It is traditionally spelled “Shalini” but my parents spelled it differently and I have had to explain why I spell my name differently than how it sounds all through school and college. In spite of the trouble it causes me, I wouldn’t change my name. It makes me unique.

Anywho, nothing special about my name. I always thought it sounded old and amish, and wished my parents would have chosen something different. I have a sister whose name is Mary. When I was younger, Sarah Elizabeth and Mary Ellen sounded very “amish-y” to me.

However, after hearing the story of what I could have been named, I was glad they chose what they did. My initials would have been a term for an illness :) Much better off with initials that don’t represent anything!

My old fashion name comes from my father’s grandmother and means ‘pearl’. Three facts about that: 1) people often tell me that their grandmother, or great auntie, or elderly neighbor was named Marjorie. 2) My high school sweet heart wrote me a love poem about how precious pearls are and I swooned. 3) My husband is not named Homer and I do not have three children named Bart, Lisa, and Maggie.
