Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    FABRIC ME!

My mom just loved the name, but its literal meaning is Christmas. The only thing I wish is that it had a nickname!

I don’t think there is any special meaning behind my name. I do know that my parents had originally intended to name me Sherry, and changed it to Sheryl at the last minute. I remember wishing I had a more common name when I was growing up, but now I’m happy to have something that you don’t hear as often :)

My parents couldn’t agree on anything but Michelle. My mom wanted to name me Angelica and my dad wanted to name me Polly. I’m glad they settled on Michelle instead!

FABRIC ME! My name is Rachael, spelled with a “chael” because my Dad’s name is Michael. My middle name used to be Lynn, but since it has no family connection, I changed it to my maiden name when I got married, because I’d rather keep my Dad’s last name than a meaningless middle name! I love family names, so my first daughter is Sylvia Joyce, named after my husband (Sylvain) and my Mom (Joyce), and our second daughter is Margot Louise (you met her in Cincy!). She’s named after my grandmother (Margaret) and my husband’s grandmother (Marie Louise) and my grandfather (Louis)! Sorry to ramble, but I LOVE NAMES!!

    “FABRIC ME!”
I’m named after my Dad’s Grandma and Great-Aunt, my mom just liked the name. They always knew they would just call me “Maggie” so I have two names. I’ve been pretty content with my name, it’s common but not a fad name that everyone has. So I get along fine besides the first day of school when I had to correct the teacher or multiple teachers in high school.

I was very narrowly an “Alyssa” (very 80’s) but at the last minute I wound up as Amy because my grandma guilted my mom into naming me after her. I’ve always been pretty happy with my name but I used to wish it was spelled “Amie” just to be different.

Fabric me – my parents chose my name because it was the only name they both liked that didn’t end in ‘r’. Since our last name started with ‘r’, they were always concerned that if they named me Heather, Jennifer, etc., the names would run together and I would constantly have to spell/enunciate my full name to people.

FABRIC ME! My mother went to see a movie when she was younger called, Prince of Peace. There was a girl in the movie named Ginger. She always said that when she had a little girl that is what she would name her. But, she had forgotten about it, and then it was actually my daddy that came up with it after all. Everyone thinks I was named that because my hair is auburn, but I was named that before I was born. Guess it was meant to be!!

My mother wanted me to be a Meredith, a Salomé or a Gwendolyn but my father wasn’t having it. He wanted something classic and traditional with no more than two syllables, so they picked Anna for a girl. And can I just say I’ve never been more thankful for being a girl than on the day I asked him what they would have named me had I been a boy. His response: Otto!

Now that I am an adult I loveeee my unique name! My mother came up with it by combining her late father’s name Norman with my father’s middle name Lee. (Pronounced No-Lee) But I hated it when I was five! No one could spell it or pronounce it correctly (people still don’t) When I was a child, I asked my mom if I could change it to Judy (from Judy Jetson) or maybe Tiffany (Totally 80’s name) and she would always explain to me that having a different name was special! It so is! :D
