Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

I’m the 5th Virginia on my mom’s side of the family. When I was 8 I tried to change my name to Lillian, but it didn’t stick.

My sisters had life sized dolls with my first and middle name. My parents literally named me after their dolls! They picked out of a hat which would be my first name and middle name.

I have a really long, traditional Hawaiian name that tells my family’s lineage. When I was a kid, I thought it was lame, but now that I am a parent myself, I think it is important to keep the tradition.

FABRIC ME! Unfortunately, no great story here. I was born in a year with a LOT of Jennifers and my mom wanted to go with something else, so 1 baby name book later, I got Britney. Eventually my family moved to a town with a ton of Britney-variations, so I went with Brit to keep things simple.

My father wanted to name me Stephanie, but my mother didn’t like that name. They both couldn’t come up with a name they both liked so they compromised and named me Stephyn-Leigh. It kind of sounds like Stephanie but my mother always just called me Stephyn. And of course everyone in grade school made fun of it for having “a boys name”. I still get a lot of “oh I just assumed you would be a man” comments to this day!!!

FABRIC ME! My name means princess, and that was always what my parents called me as a nickname. I have never been a big fan of my name. It is a little too fancy for this plain-jane girl. Plus it was very unique back in the day when I was a kid, which stressed me out since I was a shy one. Usually people would get confused and call me Samantha!

FABRIC ME…..how I got my name is more interesting. My father has 7 girls and 1 boy. I am the 2nd youngest, so when I was born and my dad found out I was a girl and my mother asked him what he wanted for a name he went with Verna…which is also the name of my sister. Yep, for the life of him he couldn’t think of a girls name so named me after her. She has a nickname so people can tell us apart, unfortunately we share pretty much the same characteristics but 20 years apart in age. We laugh because I think one Verna was enough for him now he has Two and we are both pretty spoilt.

My grandmother thought I should be called ‘Georgette’ or, alternately, ‘Suzette’.
My mother wasn’t having any of that, but I think she and my dad compromised with my middle name: Lynette.

Bless my mother for sticking to her guns — I have always loved being a ‘Dominique’!
