Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Fabric me! My name (used here is just my nickname) is after a real estate company; my mom wanted something a little different, but not odd, saw a real estate company with a name and chose that. No, my name isn’t really Remax or Keller Williams. :)

I was named after my mum, with Amy as a variation of Amanda and my middle name Jane. My mum, grandmother and great-grandmother all have/had Jane as their middle names. If I’m lucky enough to have a daughter, I’d like to do the same. I’ve always liked my name, short and sweet :-)

My dad chose my name and I love it b/c it is a bit uncommon. However, I HATE when people call me Audrey….if they would pronounce it how it sounds, they would realize there is no “Y” in my name ;)

My name was chosen because, at the time, it was unusual and my Mom liked it. My middle name was chosen because it was the name of both of my grandmothers, as well as my godmother.

Not that you asked, but my son got his name when my husband and I each pondered a book of baby names and then came up with the exact same first and middle names! I never imagined when I told him what I thought we should name our baby, if it was a boy, he’d reply, “That’s what I was thinking too!”

My mother just liked the way it was spelled, and that it was the first name in the book alphabetically. Unfortunately that was before the advent of cell phones. Now being the first name in everyone’s contact list means being doomed to a lifetime of being butt-dialed in the middle of the night.

My parents wanted to name me Victoria but changed their minds after asking my older brother what to name the baby if he had a sister. Just 5 years old at the time, he was INFATUATED with Cindy Brady from the Brady Bunch. I’m overjoyed he didn’t like Marsha or Jan. Phew!

My name was going to be Joseph if I was a boy, and either Heidi, Helen or Heather if I was a girl. Heather won out. Some of my (opinionated) extended family members thought it was a strange name – it was kind of new on the scene in our area in 1977 – but I like it and I’m glad it is a type of flower, because I love flowers.

The story I told growing up -which I thought was true for years!- is that my parents named me Misha because Michelle was so popular. Turns out they just picked it from a baby name book. I didn’t love my name growing up because it wasn’t the same as everyone else’s but now I love it!

    Thanks! Misha

Funny thing is that my cousin was named Adam Joseph, but my aunt and uncle didn’t know that my parents had planned on the name too!

So, my name is Melanie. It’s Greek, coming from Melania, which means “black” or “dark”. It’s the same root word for melanin, the pigment! Melania was a nypmh, who apparently got busy with Apollo. Pretty cool, right?

Except in my case, Melanie actually comes from “Gone with the Wind”, my mom’s favorite movie ever. Yep, as in Melanie Wilkes, Best Frenemy Forever of the infamous Scarlett O’Hara. Way less cool, right?

My name means Lamb of God or Ewe Lamb. I always liked the meaning, but I don’t think that my parents necessarily picked it for the meaning. I used to want something more unusual when I was a kid, but now I realize that what I would claim to be “cool” names has changed quite a bit over the years, so I’m kind of glad I didn’t get to choose my own name.

My parents were lazy when they named me. They named me Angie thinking people would have shortened Angela to Angie anyway. Funny thing is, everyone assumes it’s a nickname and tries to call me Angela.

They also didn’t bother to give me a middle name, they told me if I wanted one, I could pick it out on my own when I got older. People have a hard time believing that I don’t have a middle name and assume that it’s some hideous name that I’m keeping a secret. I’ve always liked not having one – it makes me a little different :)
