Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    Fabric me!
My name has significance in both Irish and Tibetan cultures. My mom has Irish heritage and my dad was in a 70’s hippie Buddhist phase at the time, so it worked.

My name is really Kathleen but my parents called me Kitty because I had a cousin called Kathy. I actually went to school with a girl with the same first, middle, and last names whose nickname was also Kitty. We took many of the same classes and wrote almost exactly alike.

    FABRIC ME!!

There was a little girl in my older sister’s Kindergarden class that had the same name. My sister came home and told my parents she really liked the name and that they should name me Erica. They didn’t have a better idea so that’s what they went with! Definitely not a whole lot of meaning behind my name. :)

It’s the French variation of Rachel, meaning little lamb. I always wanted a nickname growing up, but I hated Shelly, which was really the only one that was feasible. Now I really like my name, and the fact that it’s pretty unique.

I was a boy since I kicked so hard… that was science for you back in the 70’s. So when I came out a girl, my parents were not prepared. They had just seen “The Graduate” so the name Elaine was in their head. Thank goodness my mother is nothing like Mrs. Robinson!

My parents wanted to name me Elizabeth so they could call me Betsy. My grandpa was pushing hard for that one too. But there was another Betsy in the family and they didn’t want to make things confusing, so Susan was their second choice. My grandpa actually still insisted on calling me Betsy until I was about 5.

My mom found my name in a cheesy harloquin (sp?) novel. I recently met someone at a store check-out with the same name, same age as me, and her mom named her from the same book–Ashes in the Wind. Guess that was a popular book in the 80’s =)

My Dad was in the mail room at his work a day or two after I was born and sent a parcel out to a little town called Tara. He liked the sound of the name so suggested it to my Mum when he got to the hospital that night. I’ve always liked it because it was a bit different and that kinda suits me :)

The secret behind my name? Well, my poor Dad was so overtaken ny the moment and missing my birth by just a few minutes when he was asked by the nurse what my name would be and he blurted out Angela Lea….. Thinking he was giving me my mothers middle name. Big oops and a broken hearted mother later, he learned his mistake and realized he should have said Angela Lynn… Whoops.
