Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Fabric me! I think my dad just liked the name Katherine, but my mom didn’t want me to go by Katie, so they decided they would call me Kate. There was a period of time as a kid I didn’t like it and sometimes I have trouble with people calling me Katie instead, but I like my name. My husband says when he first met me he was drawn to my name. “It’s short and to the point. I like it.” :)

Fabric me! Apparently my dad wanted to name me okla since our last name is Homa. Not sure why Oklahoma since noone in my family has ties to it. It would have been even sillier after I got married and changed my name. Luckily my mom won with her choice, beth!

Names are important to me. I have a unique one and love it. People mispronounce and misspell it, but it makes me feel like I am that much more special.

My mom wanted to name my sister Janice after a good friend, but my dad didn’t like the name – reminded him of someone in high school. So they named her Julie. I came along 15 months later… and dad didn’t care. Named me Janice. I always wanted to have a common name like Debbie.

My name is Katie, not Katherine, or Kathleen or Katrina, just Katie. :) I have always liked the idea that my parents liked the nick-name for a long name and just went with it. My middle name is Lyn named after two awesome women, my grandmothers, Gwendolyn and Carolyn. Not totally sure why my parents didn’t just go with Katelyn. But so it is. Somehow my name just fits me, and though it’s common, I’ve always liked it. :)

I wish there was a cool story behind my name, but there is not – its just one of the top #10 girl names from the year I was born. I think in grade school one year there were 4 Brittany’s in my class. I’ve never really wished for a different name, even if it is fairly common!

my name means “goodness and light” in Hindu, but since I’m Irish everyone always assumes it’s just a different spelling of the Irish Korean. And then sometimes I’ll tell people that I was named after the Japanese beer :) which always gets me a few strange looks.
