Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Alisha means truthful. I’ve always liked it. It’s unique but common enough that people can pronounce it.

My mom chose my name while pregnant. She read it in a Sue Grafton novel, the most recent of which just came out, “Kinsey and Me.” Apparently Kinsey was a detective in the Kinsey Millhone series, and I guess my mom thought that was a good omen or something?

My name was meant for me. My parents had already planned on naming me after my dad’s oldest sister. Just in case there were any doubts running through my mother’s mind, I happened to be born on the day of the saint with the same name (according to the Catholic calendars we get at Mexican restaurants).

    FABRIC ME!!!

My name was intended to be Christina (a family name), but at the last minute, my father decided he didn’t like anymore and pulled Jennifer out of thin air. It means “fair one.” I often wished my name was different, born in the early 80s, there were Jennifer’s everywhere. But I’ve come to accept my common name and make my personality stand out instead :) My future kids, however, are all already named after significant people in my and my spouse’s lives. I want them to grow up knowing they have role models and that their moms have special people in their lives worth naming them after.

My name came to my parents (specifically my dad) in a dream, which in our culture carries a very strong need to then name your child according to the dream. Turns out it is a historical name in our family, plus one that I love (though I didn’t like it much in high school).

“Leah” in Hebrew apparently means “weary one.” (And is the wife of Jacob in the Old Testament). However, my parents named me for the name “Lea” meaning “field or meadow.” It’s only a coincidence (or so my mom says) but my Great Grandfather’s middle name was Lee. My middle name is “Faith” and I always wanted to go by Leah Faith, but it would never catch on!

I loathed it when I was young but now, appreciate having a unique name that seemly no one else has except for 90 year old women. So much for “too old” Dad.

My parents just liked my first name. They decided to go ahead and spell it with an extra silent “A” which has plagued me my whole life…although I think it looks better this way :-). My high school diploma had “Rachel” on it and my school wouldn’t reprint it. The funny this is my maiden name is Jacobs and my parents didn’t realize until after the fact that Rachel was one of Jacob’s wives in the Old Testament. This despite the fact my father is Jewish!
