Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

My name is one that has good meaning behind it. According to the internet my name means ‘noble’ or ‘exhaulted’, but that is not why my parents named me this. My dad rebuilds old cars and motorcycles so naturally he is a motor head. I am actually named after the Alison Engine which is/was used in airplane engines. If I was a boy I would have been Austin after the car Austin Healy. When I was younger I had a friend named Shelby who was named after the mustang, and naturally our fathers would joke and mine would always say,”my daughter has more horsepower than yours!” All in all I love my name and am proud of it :) Hope you enjoy my story.

I love the meaning behind my name. I was named after the first part of both of my grandmothers’ names: Martha and Lorraine. My parents combined them to get Marlo. I think it’s neat to be able to carry a part of both of them with me forever. And it’s just different enough, not TOO different :)

My name is Kerrie. My mother walked a lot when she was pregnate with me…she walked with my Uncle Kevin, my Uncle Terry and my Aunt Connie. She picked the spelling of my name because of them three! KE for Kevin, RR for Terry and IE for Connie. I think it’s pretty cute and a little corny too! ;0)

FABRIC ME! My name is pronounced like True-duh, so you can imagine how much fun that was growing up. But really, I love it. Not only because people remember it, and never know anyone else by that name (it’s not even that common in Norway, where I was born), but also because of how sensitive it’s made me to other getting other people’s names spelled and pronounced correctly. That can only be a good thing, right?

FABRIC ME! I’m the fourth of nine children and we all have D names. The first three were fairly common in the fifties…Diane, Debby, and David. I was number four and the names started getting a little less common. The last two of our family were twin girls, making our family all girls with my one brother. Ugh, my poor parents raising eight girls through adolescence!

My name means pearl, which never had any significance until I was much older. When I turned eighteen, my father bought me a pearl necklace, and told me he’d always loved my name so much, and thought that “pearl” was a great symbol for me. My father passed away five years later, but not after watching me walk down the aisle wearing my pearl necklace. Now I could never wish for anything different :-)

My name is kind of a compromise of what my parents wanted to name – my dad wanted Nellie after his mother and my mom wanted Ann after her mother. So I wound up being named Ellen Ann.

My first name is Dixon, nickname “Dixie.” My parents wanted to name the first girl after both grandmothers– Edith and Elizabeth. They opted for My grandmother Edith’s maiden name Dixon so I wouldn’t be Edith Elizabeth. Edith might be more fashionable now thanks to Downton Abbey!

My name Sanae (pronounced like sun-eye) is Japanese and it literally means “Fastest Growing Rice.” But my mom always told me that it had a deeper meaning–since rice is one of the “treasures” of Japan, to be the fastest growing rice was special and significant.:) I hated my name growing up because no one could pronounce it right and when you’re a kid, you don’t want to stand out. But as I got older I ended up loving it. When I introduce myself now, I have a clever way of making sure people remember how to pronounce it so it’s worked out!:)

My parents picked Caitlin because it was unique at the time… not so much two years later when every little girl was being named the same thing! Everyone called me Cat growing up though. They were also fans of “Who’s the Boss?” back in the day so my middle name is Alyssa after Alyssa Milano. Luckily, I’ve always loved both names!
