Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

    FABRIC ME!

With a name like Julie Andrews, I experienced my fair share of mockery most of my life! The most common question has been “do you sing?”. I sing, just not very well…like in the shower and alone in the car kind of singing. The significance of my name…I was named after my god mother who is indeed a lovely lady to be named after!

No special meaning. They picked a name that could be for either a boy or a girl. It’s more of a boy’s name, so I picked the most feminine name ever for my daughter!

“FABRIC ME!” I was named Erin because my parents had a trip to Ireland planned that had to be cancelled when they found out they were expecting me. Plus, my mom says, she just likes it and everything else they came up with, combined with a common mispronunciation of our last name made me sound like the dinner special at a mediocre Italian restaurant.

FABRIC ME! My folks wanted a more unusual name for the times but something that also still tied in to our family history, so they went with Briana — which I believe means ‘strength’ in Gaelic. My middle name, Leigh, is a family name passed down through generations and a solid 50% of my family line has it as part of their name as well, with the female spelling being ‘Leigh’ and the male iteration being ‘Lee.’

FABRIC ME! I’ve actually never been crazy about my name. I’ve gone by Sue, Susie and Susan–Susie is the one that stuck. When I had my daughter, I made sure to give her a name with no nicknames–Erin. Seems that my parents first named me Pamela (I have an engraved silver teething ring with the name), but decided after a few weeks to change it.

My parents wanted me to go by “Katie” but wanted a longer “real” name, so they named me Katharine (with the unusual A in the middle). Katharine Hepburn spells it that way, and they figured that she’s a strong, positive female role model!

My mom is a former mail carrier and she saw my name on a piece of mail a few years before I was born. And two years later, when she had a daughter…

I love my name, but my last name is very common, so there’s a lot of younger people in my area with my name. However, I’m getting married at the end of the year and changing my name to a much more unique one…yay, no more getting confused with other people!

I’m named after my dad’s Great Aunt Catherine. My mom wanted to spell it like Katharine Hepburn’s name, but my dad wouldn’t agree to the “a” instead of the “e” so they compromised with a “K” instead of a “C”. Drama. As it turned out, there were 5 variations of the name Katherine in my elementary school class, so perhaps they should have focused on finding a less common name instead of fretting over the spelling so much!

My name well I was suppose to be a boy and I have an older brother and a twin sister their names are both JA- names when it was thought I was a boy I was going to be Jacob so I would have fit the bill perfectly. Well I came to be a girl. I was very ill and predicted not to make it my parents could not pick a name so I remained un-named for 43 hours. My grandmother then found the meaning of my now name Jessica and somehow it fit, however my aunt says it is because my mom wanted her brother to marry a girl named Jessica which he didn’t. I did not like it because there only about a zillion other girls in my age bracket with the same name but I love the stories behind my name.
