Fab Freebie: What’s In A Name?

*** This giveaway is now closed – see who won below! ***

After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!

I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

I have an especially long (and complicated) last name that almost no one pronounces correctly. No biggie! My parents decided my siblings and I were to have simpler first names to balance things out. So there ya go…

My first name has no special meaning – Amy was just very popular in the seventies! My middle name, however, was given to me to honor my maternal grandmother and paternal great-grandmother. They both had the name Katherine, but spelled different ways, so my mother combined the spellings to pay tribute to both. (Kathryn + Catherine = Katherine) I did the same for my first born daughter, and combined them a different way (Kathryn + Catherine = Cathryn).

When my grandmother came to the hospital to visit she said “she is a ‘Tara’ after my favorite movie Gone With The Wind” and so my name was changed!

My dad wanted to name me after the country he served as a sailor. My parents are Puerto Rican but they both had dreams of living inland. My mother learned how to speak English by watching All My Children and her favorite character was Erica Kane. They removed the “Am-” in America and replaced the C with a K and there you go, that’s how they figured out my name.

People struggle with saying my name that I can’t even imagine the struggles with the first one! I always remember growing up my parents describing my name as “It’s like Brie cheese with 2 N’s to make it feminine.” I would repeat that all the time! :)

The doctor had told my parents that I was going to be a boy, so my parents had the name “Jared Walter” picked out (Walter is a family name). They didn’t have any girl names picked out at all, so when I was born, they were completely unprepared. I went nameless for a night while my parents prayed about it and slept on it. My mom dreamed that I was named Anna and my dad dreamed I was named Grace. When they woke up in the morning, they looked up the name Anna and found out that it means “grace,” so they went with Anna.

So Dr. Doolittle was showing at some time they were having these discussions and it was a great compromise. But I turned out more like Eliza Thornberry than the ultimately refined Eliza Doolittle.

Growing up I read about the Lydia in the Bible who sold purple cloth. Since purple has always been my very favorite color, I assumed my parents must have picked my name for that reason. When I got older I learned that my parents had not in fact had a premonition about the future child’s color preferences and instead had just really liked my name.
