Fab Freebie: Say Grace

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

Since our eyes are constantly peeled for fun nursery art lately, we’re psyched to bring you this week’s giveaway from Grace Hester Designs. And even if you’re not expecting a little one, you might just spot the perfect piece to commemorate your wedding, your brood, or even your love of foreign languages amongst Grace’s type and silhouette-based art.

Grace Hester Art

We love the idea of our little beanette learning some Spanish numbers or French animal names through these punchy designs (or even picking up a Chinese character or two). And it’s because of Grace’s fun range of prints that we couldn’t bear to narrow down this week’s prize to a specific group of designs – so TWO of you are gonna score a $50 credit toward anything in Grace’s etsy shop.

Grace Hester Languages

Here are this week’s entry details:

  • PRIZE: A $50 credit towards any item from Grace Hester Designs
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GRACE ME” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: …share with us your favorite word or saying from another language. Do you love the way a certain Italian word rolls off your tongue? Or maybe you have a go-to phrase that you learned when traveling abroad? If nothing else, is there an English word that sounds especially funny to you in Pig Latin?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, February 17th at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: Two
  • PRIZE SHIPS: All over the globe!
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

I love French because I associated it with romance. My favorite phase is “C’est la vie!” when something goes wrong because it’s so upbeat.

    GRACE ME!

I studied Spanish through college and now I teach in a high school where over half the students have a Hispanic background. I am always picking up new phrases (not all Spanish, haha). Lately “damelos” (“give me them”) has been rolling off the tongue as my new favorite way to ask them to pass their papers in.

“enchante” in french…a sophisticated way of saying “so nice to meet you” in a setting that is not super casual…i love it because it’s a little sexy and elegant – kinda like the french themselves ;)

I´m Argentine, so English is a foreign language to me! My all time favourite word is “cantaloupe”. I only recently discovered what it meant (I had always thought it was some kind of singer, since “cantar” in Spanish means to sing), and even more recently found out I was pronouncing it wrong! I still like it though! :)

My favorite foreign expression is “Pamplemousse!” French for “grapefruit,” it’s one of the first French words I learned to recognize when I lived in Canada. My good friend was talking with her mom on the phone, said the word, and I came running into the room shouting “Grapefruit!” Since then, it’s my favorite excited expression.

A close second is “Mon Petite Fromage.”

Loving that french days of the week print! Speaking of French – flashback to high school where “Josh” would say to all the pretty girls – hey, hey, hey – qu’est-ce que tu fait? in that rhyming voice of his…sticks in my head to this day and I’ve been out of HS for a loooooong time. Translation? Hey, hey, hey – what are YOU doing? Sounds so much better en francais, n’est pas?

Grace me! My mom has these fantastic Spanish proverbs such as “veo menos que un gato de escayola” meaning “i see less than a plaster cat” whenever she’s not wearing her glasses–I used to think “gato de escayola” meant “cat in a cast” sort of like the dog in “There’s something about Mary.” Other gems include “Vaya yo caliente y riase la gente” which means “Let other people laugh as long as I’m warm,” and “Te quiero mucho, como la trucha al trucho” meaning “I love you much, like Mrs. Trout to Mr. Trout.” The funny thing is that “trucha” is the regular word for trout, and it plays off the masculine and feminine endings!

A final phrase that I love is in German, and it was one of the first things I learned (to the tune of “She’ll be comin’ round the mountain”) “Ich bin Auslander und spreche nicth gut Deutsh!” meaning, “I’m a foreigner and I don’t speak good German!”
