Fab Freebie: Say Grace

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

Since our eyes are constantly peeled for fun nursery art lately, we’re psyched to bring you this week’s giveaway from Grace Hester Designs. And even if you’re not expecting a little one, you might just spot the perfect piece to commemorate your wedding, your brood, or even your love of foreign languages amongst Grace’s type and silhouette-based art.

Grace Hester Art

We love the idea of our little beanette learning some Spanish numbers or French animal names through these punchy designs (or even picking up a Chinese character or two). And it’s because of Grace’s fun range of prints that we couldn’t bear to narrow down this week’s prize to a specific group of designs – so TWO of you are gonna score a $50 credit toward anything in Grace’s etsy shop.

Grace Hester Languages

Here are this week’s entry details:

  • PRIZE: A $50 credit towards any item from Grace Hester Designs
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GRACE ME” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: …share with us your favorite word or saying from another language. Do you love the way a certain Italian word rolls off your tongue? Or maybe you have a go-to phrase that you learned when traveling abroad? If nothing else, is there an English word that sounds especially funny to you in Pig Latin?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, February 17th at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: Two
  • PRIZE SHIPS: All over the globe!
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

Grace me!!! I like to learn how to say I love you in different languages. One of my favourites is I love you in Polish – Kocham cie. It sounds like co-hum-shay. I’m pretty sure I would gift this to my very good friend who is expecting a little baby girl this May!

“Chicle en la boca?” – pretend there’s an upside-down question mark at the start of that. It means “do you have gum in your mouth?” Our Spanish teacher said it A LOT.

Favorite phrase right now…Pongo la! Just means put it there in Spanish…but it rolls nicely off the tongue. We scream it out a lot while playing Parques on family game night.

I am German and studied in English in Germany. English with a German accent is bad enough, but when your professor says things like “Zese is guilty for ze amino atsids” (supposed to mean “this is valid for the amino acids”) it’s hard not to crack up. A lot of phrases like that have become a regular part of my vocabulary. “Ze sheep eat zeir feet”, “Ze moose comes out of ze egg”, “Have you question?”… Oh man, I miss college :-)

Grace Me Please! In high school I came across an article in a magazine that had a bunch of ridiculous phrases in foreign languages and the French one always stuck with me, I thought it was one of the most hilarious things I had ever read– “Pardonnez moi, mais avez-vous un porc-epic coince entre les fesses?” and it means “Excuse me but do you have a porcupine stuck between your butt cheeks.”

My mom always tells me that years ago there was some international conference going on, and they voted on which word sounded the most beautiful… keep in mind that very often they had no idea what the word actually meant. And the most beautiful sounding word? Diarrhea.

Prepare to be nerded out. I taught a Latin class a couple of years ago, and during translation, we happened upon a combination of words that sounded really funny: feminaene puellaeque. (fem-ee-NAY-nay pwell-AY-kway). Doesn’t mean anything special (it begins a question in which you are going to be asking about “the women and the girls”), but it’s pretty fun to say.
