Fab Freebie: Say Grace

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

Since our eyes are constantly peeled for fun nursery art lately, we’re psyched to bring you this week’s giveaway from Grace Hester Designs. And even if you’re not expecting a little one, you might just spot the perfect piece to commemorate your wedding, your brood, or even your love of foreign languages amongst Grace’s type and silhouette-based art.

Grace Hester Art

We love the idea of our little beanette learning some Spanish numbers or French animal names through these punchy designs (or even picking up a Chinese character or two). And it’s because of Grace’s fun range of prints that we couldn’t bear to narrow down this week’s prize to a specific group of designs – so TWO of you are gonna score a $50 credit toward anything in Grace’s etsy shop.

Grace Hester Languages

Here are this week’s entry details:

  • PRIZE: A $50 credit towards any item from Grace Hester Designs
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GRACE ME” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: …share with us your favorite word or saying from another language. Do you love the way a certain Italian word rolls off your tongue? Or maybe you have a go-to phrase that you learned when traveling abroad? If nothing else, is there an English word that sounds especially funny to you in Pig Latin?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, February 17th at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: Two
  • PRIZE SHIPS: All over the globe!
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

Grace me. My favorite is “pura vida” which Costa Ricans use for just about everything. It translates literally to pure life, but really can mean full of life or purified life. The Costa Ricans use it constantly, as a greeting, or farewell, or just in conversation and it really summarized their outlook on life.

I can’t think of a favorite word or phrase in another language, but my favorite word in English is “serendipity.” Not only do I like the way it sounds, I love the meaning–a happy accident!

I got my degree in Latin, and the word ‘focus’ really resonates with me. It means ‘home’, ‘hearth’, or ‘family’. I like the idea of focusing (English verb) on my focus (Latin noun), so much so that I have the word tattooed on my left wrist in my husband’s hand writing as a constant reminder to do just that.

Ok… I cannot spell this right, but:

    ich com aut naderland

I come from the Netherlands… taught to me by an exchange student living with my mother so when we get into trouble we can just say this phrase and the people will think we are foreigners.

By getting into trouble I mean fooling around in department stores and laughing too loudly in quite places.

My favorite phrase is “Mon petit shou” I don’t know if I spelled “shou” correctly (it is pronounced like “shoe”) Anyway, my mother used to always say this to me…it means “My little cabbage head”. Sounds awful in English, but in French culture, it is an endearing phrase to use! (I hope–haha).

I love the word sagoyme (probably spelled horribly wrong) in Japanese. It’s what you use to express incredulousness…”Wow!” “No way!” and “You’re kidding!” are all expressed with this one phrase. Plus, it’s really fun to say. :)

And I have two favorites: the first is “mon oeil!” which literally means “my eye” in French but has the idiomatic meaning of “Yeah right!” or “No way!”

And secondly, “les haricots verts” which means green beans. Frankly it just sounds pretty when you say it.
