I have many favorite pictures. Artwork is one of my favorite things in this world. I especially love one of a kind pieces.

My favorite piece of artwork we currently have is one a good friend of mine drew…it’s a pencil recreation of a picture of my husband as an infant, being held by his father (who died when my husband was 15). It’s beautifully drawn, and is incredibly sentimental to both of us. It makes me smile whenever I see it, because we’re thinking about having kids soon, and my husband was probably the cutest baby of all time.

I love the beautiful abstract painting that one of my oldest friends made specially for us as a wedding gift. One of the perks of having professional artists as friends and relatives, I guess!

My favorite original piece of artwork is the framed piece that is hung right over our bed. My best friend from home is an artist and I have been collecting her artwork her several years. This particular one was made in a class she took on printmaking.

My favorite piece of artwork is a painting done by my husband’s grandmother. She lives on a farm and he spent lots of time during his childhood there. The scene is of their barn and beloved birdhouses. It hangs in our living room lovingly.

My favorite one-of-a-kind art piece was given to me and my hubby as a wedding present in June. A friend of mine since high school was living in China for two years and had an artist from the art district take one of our engagement photos (a close up of our holding hands) and make a replica painting. She brought it to the wedding all the way from China! It’s now hanging in our kitchen. It was by far our favorite wedding gift! :)

My favourite piece of art is a cute pencil sketch done by one of the students in my grade 8 class that I taught a couple of years ago. He drew it, framed it, and wrapped it up as a Christmas present. Best gift ever!

My fave is a watercolor painting that I did with my set of Crayola watercolors (you know the yellow 8 pack?) on a large piece of paper in my dorm room my first year of college. My mom had just passed away and it was a releasing of all this emotion. Totally non-representational (hey! the art class in my sons’ homeschool curriculum is paying off) and we see different things in it all the time, but it reminds me of how far I have come from a place when I felt so low.

The one I love the most is actually a photograph we purchased at a craft fair. My husband lived by the beach when we met and we found a print of the lifeguard station (with a view of the ocean) that was closest to his apartment. Looking at it always reminds me of those early months of dating :)

In desperate need of artwork for our drab walls. Right now, our artwork consists of some black and white photos from a good friend who’s also a photographer. Would love to truly begin my art collection.

The most important piece of art I own comes from my Uncle. When my uncle was in his teens and early twenties he was an amazing artist and was known for his watercolors of birds and wildlife in Connecticut. It was his dream to continue painting and he did so while in art school but afterward the real world kind of caught up with him and he worked full time as a home painter and slowly stopped painting for fun.
When I was little, I remember Uncle Brian being a lively guy and always playing practical jokes on my sister and I. However, not too long after that, he suffered a stroke and has not been able to paint, joke, or even remain independent anymore.
He knew I had always admired one of his paintings (a peregrine falcon jumping into flight off a tree) hanging in his living room and gave it to me as a Christmas gift. and I guess to this day, it helps me think of him as a young man who was full of energy and life…pursuing his passion. It means so much more to me than paper and paint.

My favorite artwork in my house is a set of etchings that my husband made for me before we were married. In college I spent a summer in Italy, so he created a series of four etchings of Italian landmarks/countryside. They’re in custom frames that a friend of ours made.

My favorite piece of art is a painting my Aunt Lorraine painted and framed for my husband and me. It is of a famous bridge in Yugoslavia (my husband was born there, and the bridge was destroyed in the Serbian-Croatian war in the 90’s) and it hangs proudly in our dining room. I am hoping to get some more of her artwork (dare I say when she dies? I may go to hell for that) to hang in my newly renovated home (now THAT experience is for another comment box….).
Love, love, love your blog. What a great journey to be on as a young family. Much love, luck, and success to you as you embark on your new DIY project (aka your new home!!!).
Jan xoxo

Paint me a picture…
I found a beautiful painting at an estate sale. The seller’s father had painted it as part of a collection he created as his modest bride-price for his future in-laws (he was young and poor when he asked for his wife’s hand). The picture itself is beautiful, but the story makes me love it more.

My favorite original piece of artwork that I own is a painting my grandparents had done (or commissioned, I suppose!) for my father one year for his birthday. So maybe I technically don’t own it, but it is hanging in my dining room, and possession is 9/10ths of the law (sorry dad!).
It is the view of Lake Michigan from the backyard of my grandparents’ old house. I love it because I have so many memories of visiting them at that house when I was growing up and it always brings them all back.

My favorite piece of art work is an oil painting my late mother won at a senior citizens’ club fundraiser (she put my husband’s name on the raffle stub hoping she would win so she could give it to him as a gift). It is a study in reflections inspired by the lake the local artist lives on. I love the way the tree branches merge with the water. It also reminds me of how fond my mother was of my husband.

PAINT ME A PICTURE!! I don’t have any “real” art, but I have a wall of black & white family photos that my sister gave me as a gift. She found a bunch of old family photos, copied them in several sizes, and framed them in different black frames. It’s a great call & my favorite decor in my apartment!

A friend made origami-like Christmas cards some years back that featured a calendar on one side and really pretty plant/flower art reminiscent of Arts & Crafts style on another. Slapped that baby into a frame (the flower side) sandwiched between two pieces of glass, and it’s nice!

My favorite piece of art is a still life painting my grandmother gave me as an engagement/ wedding gift. She was an outstanding artist who eventually lost all her artistic ability to Alzheimer’s Disease. It is a daily reminder to us of the gifts of life and family and I am honored to have a piece of her so close.

I have this great painting that my brother did. It is all in reds and browns and is of this weird elf or forest spirit peering around a tree at something we can’t see. He said it was never really finished but I love it. I think it looks like an illustration out of some cool children’s book.

My favorite piece is a painting I DIY’d of a silhouette of trees. It’s one of only two paintings I’ve done, and I love both, but I quickly realized those two were a fluke and I’m not actually a good painter!

2 fave pieces, one is DNA art… a swab of my son’s mouth, send in the kit, and we now have a huge canvas of his DNA profile in pretty colours on our wall – we tell him we can see his naughty genes :)
The other is a local artist, Ed Ambrose. We got married at the Art Gallery, and many people gave us gift certificates for art… so this was our first piece of real art, and our first ‘grown up’ furnishing for our first home.

When my boyfriend and I moved in together, I ordered a black and white giclee print of two people walking around Boston under a red umbrella. I ordered it from Etsy, and completely unexpectedly, the seller included a smaller print of the same couple in DC (with the same red umbrella, of course). It was totally unexpected, and really special because we had met in DC, and had just moved from there to Boston. They are hanging in my entry way, and the first thing I see when I walk in the door of my home. :)

I just recently moved into a loft and am in constant search of new modern ideas and artwork. On an weekend hunt in a Vinitque Market, I found that most fabulous piece of art, for the most fabulous price! It has lovely hues of teal blue and a slight bit of brown paint on a plaster surface that has been painted onto a canvas. I was so excited to get it home to my awesome brick walls!
When arriving home with my new found love, my fiance was quick to ask, “What is it of?” My answer “Nothing!” and since then, it has been dubbed “Nothing” and has a lovely spot on the wall. It’s perfect for our space and the only piece in the loft thus far…
