My favorite piece in our house right now is one that was given to us as a wedding gift last year. A family friend took beautiful scenery pictures around our town and framed them for us. It’s gorgeous and reminds me every day what I love about where we live!

My favorite piece of artwork is a picture that my friend took of our first son. We adopted him and she took a beautiful picture of him without a shirt on, in a basket on the grass. I love everything about it!

My favorite art would be the CD cases my husband arranged together in record album frames. I wanted to incorporate more of his style into our decorating and he really took to the idea. Picking and choosing the illustrations he wanted to show. They are fantastic and really represent him!

PAINT ME A PICTURE! My favorite piece of artwork is a painting/collage that my husband used to propose to me! He had a good friend of ours paint an abstract representation of me, with pages from his journal collaged in the background. It hangs in our dining room as a reminder of the beginning of our love journey!

My favorite one of a kind piece of art that I currently own is the amazing painting my 10 year old son’s friend Sophie and her mom made me for my 30th birthday. It is beautiful and so very special to me for so many reasons!!

Paint me a picture! My husband took a great photo of the Ferry Building & Bay Bridge while leaning out of our hotel window when we were in San Francisco together for a conference. When we moved this summer, we made it black and white and had it printed on a 24×24 canvas–makes us think of our favorite place and a great trip every time we look at it.

My current fave piece of art is a set of hand-made glass mugs that my friend made in a pottery class. They have our names etched into the sides along with some cool texturized areas and a perfectly grippable handle.
But I would love a new painting! :)

My fiance and I love to turn lyrics from our favorite songs into hidden art around the house. We have a welcome mat that says “happiness” from the song 3am by Matchbox 20. (Happiness is a mat that sits on your doorway) A few summers ago, I was interning half a state away from my fiance, then apartment-sharing boyfriend, and we went months without seeing each other. I painted a canvas dark blue like the dark evening sky, then painted a bright red number 6 (or 9, depending how you turned it) on top. Along the inside curves of the number, I painted letters in light blue that read “TimE is a NumbER ThaT RESTS on a waLL”. The letters RSTLNE (the most common letters in the alphabet – remember that for wheel of fortune kids!) were capitalized for more interest. The lyric is from the song “Washington Square” by the Counting Crows (one of our favorite bands). Part of the lyrics are below:
“Now I live in the shadows
Where light is electric
And time is a number
That rests on a wall
And nobody knows me
My friends and my family
Are as far from this city
As Washington Square”
My fiance loved the artwork when I presented it to him for his birthday. The letters are only a few shades lighter than the background and from a distance blend in so you can only see the red. I told him he could hang it either as a 6 or a 9, but he hung it sideways so it’s neither number, but both at the same time.
We love to add quirky riddles everywhere. When we have children, I’ll be painting a huge mural on the wall with transparent yellow and green flowers up to the ceiling (cellophane flower of yellow and green towering over your head) and a badger and a toad’s profile (badger and one eyed toad from the song flying horses by Dispatch).
Right now, we want to incorporate the lyrics “And he seems so close as he reaches out his hand
But we are never quite as close as we are led to understand” from the Counting Crows song “When I dream of Michelangelo” onto an artist’s recreation of the famous section of the Sistine Chapel, the hands. I’d love if I could present this commissioned piece to my fiance as a wedding gift at our wedding this summer. :)
Thanks for the opportunity!

My husband and I moved into our first place last August. It’s a two family home that was built during the great depression. When the keys were handed over and we did our first walk through, we noticed only one thing left behind – a painting of red tulips hanging on the wall. Come to find out the woman who first lived in the house with her family had painted it. After she passed away and the house was sold the painting stayed behind, and each person who continues to live in the home leaves it for the next owner to enjoy. We have come to love the painting and have become very fond of it! Although it will be hard to leave it behind, once we save up to afford are own home, knowing how far it has come and how many people will continue to treasure it is touching.

How about if you don’t have a favorite yet? I got rid of a few pieces some years back. There’s a piece that I covet that’s in my parent’s house, done by a very gifted cousin of the DC waterfront with the iconic DC cherry blossoms in full bloom. Someday I’d like to call it mine!

Currently – we enjoyed the many, many, many (did I say MANY?) art pieces done by our 5 year old Evan. He loves to draw and its been great to see the transition of drawing happy faces to stick figures, to actual drawings of people with a face and body. Gotta love some kid art!

Our only piece of art (yes, I know, this is sad). Is from the trip we took to Paris in June. We saved up for 2 years for the trip and we wanted to find something we could afford but also would love forever. We found it in Paris, in a shop that buys leftover art that no one purchased from Montmartre (an area where starving artists try to sell their work). It is a watercolor of a street in Paris. Incidentally, we ended up concieving our first child on the trip (He’s due in February), so it’s a good thing we scrounged up the money for the painting, because we won’t be taking more trips anytime soon!!
We would looove for our second nail in the wall to be responsible for hanging an Erica Eriksdotter piece!! Thanks :)
