Fab Freebie: IKEA, IKEA, IKEA!

*** This giveaway is no longer accepting entries – scroll down to see who won!***

Perhaps you’ve heard of a little store called Ikea? And perhaps you’ll be interested in a $350 gift card from them for this week’s giveaway? Yeah we couldn’t believe it either when they emailed us. Hooray is right, Ikea catalog. Well said.

Ikea Catalog

And not only are they generously offering up this week’s sweet prize, Ikea’s also presenting “The Life Improvement Project” where they’ll award one philanthropic individual $100,000 to take a one year sabbatical to help others (start a non-profit, volunteer for a year, etc). Plus they’re hosting free seminars in their stores about improving your life through your living space.

Ikea Life Improvement Proje

But back to how you can get your mitts on that $350 gift card:

  • PRIZE: A $350 gift card to Ikea!
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “IKEA Me!” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … tell us what you’d do if you could spend one year helping others. Would you open an after school program? Volunteer at a homeless shelter? Rescue animals?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, October 27th at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here Thursday morning for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

******************************

You guys are quite impressive with your nearly 11,000 entries. So impressive in fact that Ikea decided to change their plans and give away not just one, not just two, but THREE $350 gift cards. That’s over $1000 in gift cards! Thanks Ikea!

So let’s see who the lucky three winners are according to random.org:

  • Alyssa Allen (who’s Life Improvement Project would include moving her fam somewhere in the world to help the poverty crisis)
  • NEPD (who’d give her wedding florist services away free of charge)
  • Jill (who’d give a year working with the Wildlife Conservation Society)

Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Ikea.

I would love to spend a year working with kids who are stuck in the hospital for extended periods of time. Reading books, doing crafts, etc – anything that would make their days a little bit brighter.

I changed my mind, I think. I still think my high school needs a good after school program, but I have done a fair bit of volunteer work with our local urban farm. I would love to put more money into that and expand our program. The food produced goes to at risk elementary students who are enrolled in their early childhood education program at the community center. We also have a modest program to teach students and their families how to cook with fresh produce. I would love to give them a brand new kitchen to work in and expand that program.

I’d love to use that money to give back to children of soldiers who died on active duty in the Military, to set up a scholarship program for them. As one of those children, I know how hard it is to get through losing a parent and scholarships can make a difference for these kids in helping them through college since their VA money doesn’t cover very much (it doesn’t even cover tuition at a community college any more!).

I honestly don’t know what I’d do with a year to volunteer. I’d seriously have to think. I’ve always felt drawn to Eastern European and Russian orphanages as I used to babysit a little Russian girl from one. She had been given up when she was three and got adopted when she was 5 or 6. She said I looked like her sister, and that always broke my heart. If not kids, it’d be with water. National Geographic had a water issue several months ago that my daughter and I found fascinating.

I’d definitely want my 5 year old to be a part of whatever I chose. Our year would be spent helping and homeschooling. She’d learn way more in our volunteer year than in school…in many ways.

    Man, this has me thinking…

Wow a whole year to do whatever I wanted – I’d probably volunteer at a local hospital helping run their second hand shops or doing something that I could involve my kids in so they would learn more about helping those in need (they are a little young now though).

Well… I think this time around if I were to full time volunteer again I would go abroad. I spent 2007-2009 as a full time volunteer working in immigration assistance here in the US and the better part of 2004 working at children’s home in Bolivia… this time I would like to go back to southern Africa maybe work towards helping folks get clean water
