Fab Freebie: IKEA, IKEA, IKEA!

*** This giveaway is no longer accepting entries – scroll down to see who won!***

Perhaps you’ve heard of a little store called Ikea? And perhaps you’ll be interested in a $350 gift card from them for this week’s giveaway? Yeah we couldn’t believe it either when they emailed us. Hooray is right, Ikea catalog. Well said.

Ikea Catalog

And not only are they generously offering up this week’s sweet prize, Ikea’s also presenting “The Life Improvement Project” where they’ll award one philanthropic individual $100,000 to take a one year sabbatical to help others (start a non-profit, volunteer for a year, etc). Plus they’re hosting free seminars in their stores about improving your life through your living space.

Ikea Life Improvement Proje

But back to how you can get your mitts on that $350 gift card:

  • PRIZE: A $350 gift card to Ikea!
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “IKEA Me!” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … tell us what you’d do if you could spend one year helping others. Would you open an after school program? Volunteer at a homeless shelter? Rescue animals?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, October 27th at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here Thursday morning for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

******************************

You guys are quite impressive with your nearly 11,000 entries. So impressive in fact that Ikea decided to change their plans and give away not just one, not just two, but THREE $350 gift cards. That’s over $1000 in gift cards! Thanks Ikea!

So let’s see who the lucky three winners are according to random.org:

  • Alyssa Allen (who’s Life Improvement Project would include moving her fam somewhere in the world to help the poverty crisis)
  • NEPD (who’d give her wedding florist services away free of charge)
  • Jill (who’d give a year working with the Wildlife Conservation Society)

Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Ikea.

An entire year? wow! I have always wanted to open an art center. Did you take art classes in high school? Remember how fantastic it was to go into the art room and explore whatever technique you wanted. The art room saved my life, literally, when I was younger. I would love to open a place you could go and be creative, without needing to be a student or pay huge amounts of money to participate. So…Free Art :)

If I could volunteer for a year, I would work with an organization who focuses on fighting childhood hunger. As a mother to a (thankfully) thriving 17-month old, it absolutely kills me to think of how many babies and children do not get enough to eat or the proper nutrition for their growing bodies.

I seriously just screamed at excitement about this IKEA giveaway. Obviously the $350 would be great, but I’ve got to enter the bigger giveway too. I graduate from law school in May and I dream of running a pro-bono family law clinic so that people can have representation during that critical and life-changing time of their life (divorce, custody, etc.).

If i could travel for a year, and not have to worry about expenses, I would go to all the major bases, and babysit when the moms needed time to grocery shop, i would hold a kids book reading at the local library on base, and do anything i could to make it easier on the families.

I already work as the PR Director for a children’s nonprofit benefiting abused girls. I would use the money to start an independent living training class for our girls so they live safely when they “age out of the system.” Since they grew up in residential treatment they didn’t learn the things that “normal” children learn from their mothers like how to boil water or balance a checkbook.

If I had one year off to help others I would love to do a few different things! Here in the states I would love to work with Gospel Rescue Mission and serve the homeless. Here in Tucson we have a large homeless population, and I’ve always been moved by the idea that there are so many out there without a safe refuge to return to at the end of the day. Also here in the states I would love to work with children and babies that don’t have parents to love on them – maybe in an orphanage, or a setting where kids are waiting to be adopted? I just know how loved and cherished our little 17-month-old boy is, how focused we are on him and each little stage of development brings us such excitement and joy, and it breaks my heart to think that someone’s first smile or steps might be missed.

My husband and I were blessed to spend 2 weeks in South Africa 2 years ago working at an orphan feeding project and doing home health care visits in the townships, and we witnessed just a corner of the vast need in Africa. So, outside of the US I would love to serve somehow in Africa, in any capacity, with kids, adults, people with HIV, whatever.

    IKEA ME PLEASE!!!

If I had one year to help others, oh golly, how could I pick just one thing? I looove helping others. I’d probably have to focus one thing – helping children in other countries get adopted. It breaks my heart when I hear about the “one child” rule in China where orphanages are overrun, and in so many places in Africa where AIDS is rampant and kids are left orphaned. But that doesn’t discount all the orphaned kids in America either. I would love to dedicate one year of my life to meeting the needs of these children (food, shelter, clothing, school, etc.) and to helping them find homes. I know I definitely want to start this in my home by adopting.

Thanks for such a great question!

I’m a wildlife major and an animal-lover, so I’d love to spend my days rescuing wildlife (like those affected by oil spills) and rehabilitating them. Or something a little closer to home, I’d open up a shelter for unwanted pets that would be less like a bunch of cages and more like little pet homes, with lots of love to go around. :)
