Perhaps you’ve heard of a little store called Ikea? And perhaps you’ll be interested in a $350 gift card from them for this week’s giveaway? Yeah we couldn’t believe it either when they emailed us. Hooray is right, Ikea catalog. Well said.
And not only are they generously offering up this week’s sweet prize, Ikea’s also presenting “The Life Improvement Project” where they’ll award one philanthropic individual $100,000 to take a one year sabbatical to help others (start a non-profit, volunteer for a year, etc). Plus they’re hosting free seminars in their stores about improving your life through your living space.
But back to how you can get your mitts on that $350 gift card:
- PRIZE: A $350 gift card to Ikea!
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “IKEA Me!” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: … tell us what you’d do if you could spend one year helping others. Would you open an after school program? Volunteer at a homeless shelter? Rescue animals?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, October 27th at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here Thursday morning for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
******************************
You guys are quite impressive with your nearly 11,000 entries. So impressive in fact that Ikea decided to change their plans and give away not just one, not just two, but THREE $350 gift cards. That’s over $1000 in gift cards! Thanks Ikea!
So let’s see who the lucky three winners are according to random.org:
- Alyssa Allen (who’s Life Improvement Project would include moving her fam somewhere in the world to help the poverty crisis)
- NEPD (who’d give her wedding florist services away free of charge)
- Jill (who’d give a year working with the Wildlife Conservation Society)
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Ikea.

I am going to start volunteering at the local pregnancy resource center. I’m super interested in childbirth and the health of pregnant/new moms/babies, so I’d lean toward something like that. I’m hoping this gig will allow me to doula for women who might not have another support.

I already work at/co-direct a non-profit tutoring center for children with dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities.
If I had a year to devote to additional volunteer work, I would offer my time at area schools, helping students learn to read. Many families cannot afford even the discounted tutoring rates we offer, and I would love to spend all day every day teaching children to read who might not otherwise get that chance.

I love love love Ikea and will be going to Charlotte in a month to get my Ikea fix:)
I think if I were able to take a year off of work I would like to get more involved with Habitat for Humanity. I want to start volunteering around here in my local area though with my work and winter coming I have decided to put it off till Spring. I really enjoy doing remodeling and learning more in general about contracting. (I’m going to be the next Mike Holmes.. Ha) I would love to learn more about building and electrial work including getting to work with new tools all while working to support a family that is in need. I get to help families some with my current job since I do home health therapy but I think it would feel so rewarding to not only do something you’re really interested in but give a family a new start. I feel if I could really invest time with this company it would probably turn into something I could see doing all the time and traveling around the country with to help others.
Awesome Gift!

I’d volunteer for a super cool organization, Challah for Hunger, that bakes challah bread and sells it on college campuses to raise money for humanitarian aid and to help fight genocide. I was involved with them in college when it was just an itty-bitty thing on one campus, and now it’s nation wide.

ok, so, i pretty much help others all the time. i do what i consider an immensely important but completely undervalued and underappreciated, not to mention under paid, job working for a non profit. it isn’t the nonprofit, which works towards ending domestic violence, but it’s society who says this is worth x amount of dollars. i work early mornings, i work nights, i work weekends to promote domestic violence awareness. it is my passion, and that comes across in my presentations to the community. so i think my “what can i do to help others” is just continuing what i do!

I think I would like to work with educating people about diabetes. My brother (only 24!) was diagnosed just this year. I would love to teach young people how to prevent and live with diabetes. It’s really difficult for young people to actually realize how important it is for them to properly take care of their body and learn how to manage their disease.

I would love to have the opportunity to run a full time quilt center. A place for women to gather and learn about quilting and a place to be able to create and donate to charity. I live in an area where it is difficult to find place to get together and share our craft and it would be FABULOUS to have a place just for us!

This post honestly took my breath away. And not just because of the amazing gift card which would pretty much make my year, but because of what Ikea is giving away for an entire year.
If I had the chance…and the budget, I would start a non-profit called Food to Grow. It would be a facility on 3 acres that had a garden. I would invite teachers to bring kids for free and learn how to grow food, harvest, and help prepare a meal. And so much more!!!
