Perhaps you’ve heard of a little store called Ikea? And perhaps you’ll be interested in a $350 gift card from them for this week’s giveaway? Yeah we couldn’t believe it either when they emailed us. Hooray is right, Ikea catalog. Well said.
And not only are they generously offering up this week’s sweet prize, Ikea’s also presenting “The Life Improvement Project” where they’ll award one philanthropic individual $100,000 to take a one year sabbatical to help others (start a non-profit, volunteer for a year, etc). Plus they’re hosting free seminars in their stores about improving your life through your living space.

But back to how you can get your mitts on that $350 gift card:
- PRIZE: A $350 gift card to Ikea!
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “IKEA Me!” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: … tell us what you’d do if you could spend one year helping others. Would you open an after school program? Volunteer at a homeless shelter? Rescue animals?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, October 27th at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here Thursday morning for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

I’d love to partner up with LiveStrong, Komen for the Cure, or other cancer charities and create something for younger children of cancer patients. I personally saw my own mother battle cancer for 1 1/2 years, eventually succumbing to it when I was 18. I think there needs to be more help for children as they try to process what is physically going on with their parent as well as emotionally what they AND their parent is going through. As a mother now, I an only imagine all the things going on in my mom’s head – trying to get better but trying to remain strong for us. Anyway, that’s what I would do!

I have always wanted to help our homeless vets – veterans make up a disproportionate number of those who are homeless, and I really believe we should do more to help out.

I would love to help with small children in some way. maybe be a volunteer at a children’s hospital and try to bring a little more joy and happiness into their lives.
Corinna says
IKEA ME! I would try to do something to help clothe needy children at my daughter’s elementary school. There is a Santas Anonymous kind of charity that provides gifts at Christmas, but I recently learned that they also accept clothes because lots of children go through our Illinois winter wearing the same sweater or long-sleeved shirt every day. It’s really bothersome to me that this is happening!
Emily says
Ikea Me! I would open an orphanage in Mexico.

I would spend the year volunteering and donating food to soup kitchens, shelters and to the “tent cities”. There is an epidemic in our country – millions are going without food and are suffering. Its ashame and who knows when things will change. Until then, I want to do as much as can to help out. I would also help homeless animals find home and donate time and money to the animal shelters that are in need.

I would help children with learning disabilities. I’d love to teach them to accept their disabilities as part of who they are but not to concentrate too much on that as a missing trait, as something makes them unique, teach different ways to learn, and focus on strengthening their resilience and working hard to overcome the difficulties.

LOVE your website, by the way!
This past year I helped start a satellite of Kids Against Hunger in Lakeville, MN. It’s a nonprofit organization that assembles and ships meals for less than $.23 per meal to those who are facing starvation and malnutrition both in America and around the world. Each meal is made up of soy protein, vegetarian chicken powder, dehydrated vegetables and rice and keeps for 3 years from the packing date. Just 1 meal provides a person with enough nutrition for an entire day.
I work full-time and have often thought how wonderful it would be if I could take time off and devote all of my time to ensuring that Kids Against Hunger-Lakeville is making as much of an impact as possible- both in our community and in our world.

IKEA ME!!! I would spend the year working towards cleaning up our oceans. They are in such bad shape. Many sea creatures, important to the natural circle of life, are in danger of becoming extinct. Also, rivers that flow into the ocean are emitting horrible toxins. Our oceans contain massive floating islands of trash, all at the fault of human carelessness. We need to take care of our Earth, our home, and its’ waters. Afterall, we only have the one.

I would spend a year volunteering with foster children and using the money to help with recruiting foster parents and providing support to the children and prospective parents. It’s such an important system, but horribly underfunded, and both foster parents and kids need and deserve a lot of support and love.

I would help immigrants learn English. I think it’s a common misconception in parts of this country that immigrants do not want to learn the language, but that’s simply not true! They need help – and good language classes can be expensive.

We are in desperate need of a homeless shelter here in Brownwood, TX. This has been a need for a long time, and a friend of mine is getting to be a part of finally convincing the city that, yes, we do in fact have people living on the streets in need of shelter. I would jump in with Amber and invest in a much-overdue homeless shelter for our community.
In fact, I may just do that anyway… :)
Dilvia Teixeira says
IKEA ME! I would help orphans in underprivileged countries and open a counseling center.
