Perhaps you’ve heard of a little store called Ikea? And perhaps you’ll be interested in a $350 gift card from them for this week’s giveaway? Yeah we couldn’t believe it either when they emailed us. Hooray is right, Ikea catalog. Well said.
And not only are they generously offering up this week’s sweet prize, Ikea’s also presenting “The Life Improvement Project” where they’ll award one philanthropic individual $100,000 to take a one year sabbatical to help others (start a non-profit, volunteer for a year, etc). Plus they’re hosting free seminars in their stores about improving your life through your living space.
But back to how you can get your mitts on that $350 gift card:
- PRIZE: A $350 gift card to Ikea!
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “IKEA Me!” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: … tell us what you’d do if you could spend one year helping others. Would you open an after school program? Volunteer at a homeless shelter? Rescue animals?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, October 27th at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here Thursday morning for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
******************************
You guys are quite impressive with your nearly 11,000 entries. So impressive in fact that Ikea decided to change their plans and give away not just one, not just two, but THREE $350 gift cards. That’s over $1000 in gift cards! Thanks Ikea!
So let’s see who the lucky three winners are according to random.org:
- Alyssa Allen (who’s Life Improvement Project would include moving her fam somewhere in the world to help the poverty crisis)
- NEPD (who’d give her wedding florist services away free of charge)
- Jill (who’d give a year working with the Wildlife Conservation Society)
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Ikea.

I am a dental hygienist, and if I were to spend a year helping people, I would travel to areas of the world in need of oral health education. I would teach as many people as possible how to care for their teeth and gums, and as a result, improve their overall health :)

IKEA ME!!! Wow, what a great giveaway! I see 10,000+ on this one!
I’ve got a soft heart for animals that are from puppy mills. It’s a sad, almost horrific life for a dog to live, and since most people don’t know much about puppy mills or even know they exist, I would spend my time educating everyone, finding the guilty abusers and rescuing the animals in need. Heck, I’d quit my job now if I knew I could end this cruelty.

I’d probably help out a food bank or gather food for the homeless… I become WAY to emotionally attached to people!

IKEA ME!!!! If I had a year off (and I may have some time off soon, involuntarily due to company cut backs…) I would start some sort of program to help make my city look nicer and more enjoyable for all. I had this idea when I was running around the town seeing all these ugly utility boxes (many with taggings) and thought it would be great to get local youth artists to paint murals on the boxes.

IKEA ME!!!
OMG – I am dying to finally have the right storage for my playroom/office, $350 would go a long way at Ikea!
If I had a year to give, I would like to help kids get healthcare they need through mobile units in the community – kind of like a housecall :)
Greta says
IKEA ME! I would use the money/spend the year helping seniors with elder law and estate planning–a visit with a lawyer can literally be the difference between keeping your house or having to sell to enter a nursing home. I think its incredibly important and so many people don’t feel they can afford to do it.
Tina says
IKEA ME!
I’d volunteer at an animal shelter.
Stacy Martinez says
“IKEA Me!”
My heart breaks to see the plight of the homeless in our nation. They are shackled to this lifestyle by addiction, mental illness, and/or financial misfortune. I’d start a nonprofit that would do whatever it takes, for however long it takes, to pull these individuals out of the pit in which they have fallen. With compassion and persistence, lock hands with them and pull them out.

If I had a year to give, I would almost definitely spend it volunteering in a neonatal intensive care unit. My son was born at 27 weeks, and the NICU is a place that most people never enter and everyone prays for their babies to stay out of, and I’d just love to be able to spend my days rocking babies and generally just doing anything that would be of help. So many parents live far away from the NICU and don’t get to visit their babies each day, but all of the babies deserve to be rocked and cuddled each day!

Jill P. says

Cylie Greene says
IKEA ME!
If I could take a year off I would go overseas to Africa and start an orphanage or help develop an already established one. This has been my passion since I was a little girl but have never had the means to do so. My desire is to love the unloved and care for the unwanted. I want to give hope to those whose hope has been taken from them and the security of clean water and pure air to breathe has been shattered. I want to make a difference in the world and would love nothing more than to change a child’s life.
