And our lucky-slash-friendly winner this week is… Jennifer M (whose best friend is her husband. They met in college studying architecture together and now work together). Congrats!
If you saw that title above and thought “oh, like the Bestå media storage system from Ikea” instead of “typo alert!” then you may be just as into the fine purveyor of flat-packaged Swedish furniture as we are. And if you’re not the only Ikea lover in your circle of friends, then you’ll be happy to learn that this Saturday on March 9th Ikea is celebrating BYOF (Bring Your Own Friend) day as part of their ongoing Life Improvement Project. The day will feature freebies, special discounts, seminars, activities, and even gift card giveaways. Speaking of which… they’re giving one lucky reader three $100 gift cards right here this week (one for the winner and two for his or her friends) – which I’m pretty sure would solidify your status as BFFs for life.
- PRIZE: Three $100 gift cards to Ikea
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “BYOF ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … about your BFF. How did you meet? How long have you been besties. What’s the weirdest thing you love doing together? Do you have funny nicknames for each other – or a secret handshake that involves winking and doing the Macarena?
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: We always beg every vendor to ship internationally but some companies are not legally able to vend things beyond specific areas (more on that here). This giveaway is open to the United States.
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, March 6th at 8pm or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winners. Good luck…
- ***COMMENT ISSUES? If you’re trying to enter but keep getting a “duplicate comment” warning, click here to see how to solve it!
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Ikea.

BYOF ME!
To quote Mindy Kaling, a best friend isn’t a person, it’s a tier.
I have two best friends. A and I became best friends in middle school because we shared “specials” and our alphabetized seats led to us sitting next to each other (“Br” and “Bu” – alphabetized seating worked to our advantage for the 6 years we went to school together). She lives overseas now, but the weirdest thing we loved doing together was jumping on a trampoline to the Backstreet Boys (huge stereo system propped precariously in my bedroom window). We had not just funny nicknames, but a secret signature/symbol, and I still have never told anyone what it means.
My other best friend is S. We shared several classes freshman year of college, and I stalked her until she became my friend because I liked her sneakers and hair. She thought I was a weirdo until Junior year, but then we ended up living together for 3 years and now we still talk daily. The weirdest thing we’ve ever done: She was anxious and gassy before her wedding, so I pushed fart bubbles out of her stomach while she laid in her wedding dress on a hotel bed. It was a desperate attempt but luckily it worked and she had a bloat-free wedding. (Instructions: make flat hand, using side of hand, push down on abdomen while sliding down – it sounds creepier than it was?)

My best friend, Megan, and I became friends because we were both going through a break up at the same time. Coincidentally, we have both recently moved into new places and could sure use some Ikea time!

BYOF me! I could not resist this giveaway, not only for the great prize but for a chance to talk about my BFF. We’ve been friends for 20 years and met when we were 10. The strange thing is that we hadn’t met sooner, since we went to school together starting in kindergarten, but we didn’t have the same teacher until 5th grade. We continued attending the same schools all the way through college and lived together for five years after college. Many of our friends referred to us as “Chelexis” (she’s Chelsea, I’m Alexis) because of how we were pretty much a package deal until I moved to another city.

My best friend and I met on the first day of Kindergarten. She had a pair of red glasses that I was taken with, and for the following several months, she told her mom I was her best friend, and that my name was “Idunno.” We celebrate our “Anniversary” every September (this year will mark our 23rd year of friendship).
We experiment with “homemade art” in the form of collages and do a lot of rearranging our homes in hopes of finding the exact correct arrangement. (That last part is usually followed up by trips to the store to get materials necessary to improve more…)

My best friends, M and Chris, are so different from one another but they each represent the different aspects of my personality. M and I can close down a bookstore with the best of them and Chris and I have been known to close down a bar or two in our day. Before we became old and boring. I couldn’t make it without either of them.

My best friend and I used to be arch enemies. You know, the age old “she was that b* who was sleeping with my ex-boyfriend and I hated her existence” thing. One night we crossed paths at a bar, started talking, and realized we both hated that scumbag loser.
We’ve been inseparable ever since :)

I met my best friend at a horse show. I’m ashamed to admit that when she sat down to talk to me I was so annoyed, couldn’t she see I was trying to memorize a jump course!!
Thank God she did sit down and didn’t give up, she is by far the funnyest, whittiest and sweetest person I’ve had the pleasure to know :)

I met my “BFF” the summer before college at OU, when we were both at the school for a symposium. We became best friends through our time in the Pride of Oklahoma marching band. We were actually pregnant at the same time last year, and our babies (my first, her second) were born three weeks apart. I live in Kansas City, and she’s in Fort Worth, Texas, so we’re 9 hours apart. I’m actually DRIVING to visit her next week so we can hang out and meet each other’s baby!
