The New DSLR Camera We Bought

You guys get extra credit for being especially perceptive, because as some of you have noticed, we got a new camera (we weren’t paid or perked, we just bought it with our own benjamins for reasons I’m about to explain).

Camera New 3200

It’s a Nikon 3200 that we purchased on Amazon (here’s an affiliate link to the same model we bought) – basically the latest version of our previous DSLR, the Nikon 3000 that we got back in early 2010. The reason for the upgrade? Well, let’s just say the resident klutz around here (that’s me) finally klutz-ed it up a bit too much for our poor camera to handle. Can I get a womp womp?

It actually happened back when I was working on the deck. I was cutting my stair stringers and in a heat/sawdust induced haze, didn’t realize that I had set the camera down on the other end of my 2 x 10 board. Long story short, the vibrations of the saw subtly shook the board until the camera shimmied right off the edge and onto the concrete (I was looking down at my cut, so I was completely surprised by this turn of events). Here, allow me to reenact it for you.

Camera Reenactment

It was not my finest moment. In fact it was up there with failing inspection when I had to tell Sherry the camera had fallen on the ground because of some dumb cutting incident.

This is not the first time this camera has been dropped. Considering the activities that we photograph regularly (we’ve taken about 300 photos a week for the past 2+ years with this guy, which adds up to over 39,000 photos!), it’s had its fair share of bumps, drops, paint splats, dirt smears, and sawdust-ings. But I guess this particular incident was too much for it to handle and suddenly we could only take pictures in manual focus mode. Awesome. Just kidding, it stunk (auto focus is amazingly helpful for us since we often grab pics of things in action- like Clara & Burger, and don’t have time to auto focus each time).

Camera Blurry Photo

I called our local camera shop and learned they’d have to send it off to Nikon to repair it. And assuming it’s a fixable issue, our max cost would be about $150. Not too bad… except that it’d take 6-8 weeks to complete. And since we quickly realized we couldn’t survive (aka: blog) for two months without a camera, we thought about:

  • renting a camera while ours got fixed (it turns out that renting one for two months would have cost more than just buying a new one)
  • getting a cheap point & shoot camera for the next few months (but we decided that cheaping out on a just-for-now camera would be money down the drain, instead of putting it towards something we’d really want, like an updated DSLR with more capabilities)

So ultimately we took it as a sign from above that we should get ourselves a new one after over two and a half years of faithful use of our older one. We’re still going to get the old one fixed though, just to always have a backup DSLR on hand (so that if we should ever break the new one we won’t feel the same we-have-a-blog-and-can’t-be-without-a-camera-for-two-months pressure to buy yet another camera ever again). Hooray.

We decided to stick with Nikon (we’ve been very happy with our first DSLR) and go with something in the D3000 series (since we weren’t looking to relearn everything and it meant the 50mm lens we bought last summer would still work on our new camera). Of course our new camera wasn’t cheap (we got it for $699 on Amazon – it was about $250 more than our previous one) but at this point we’re looking at it as a necessary business expense. And the D3200 offered some nice improvements – like better shooting in low light, a more accurate auto white balance, and my favorite: HD video (hence the improvement some of you have noticed in our latest videos).

Camera Still

Yep, the image above is a video screenshot, not a still photo (which is a huge improvement from our Flip cam’s capabilities) and it gets me all hot and bothered. And not just because of my sexy wife.

So as much as we’re excited by the new features, we’re still definitely getting the hang of it. But overall we’re really happy with the new camera. Here are a few of the photos we took (all without white-balancing or worrying about lighting like we did with our prior camera):

Dining Chairs2

Trains After Burger

Stools11

Love Art9

Deck Furn8

Basketball Clara Playing

Mor Table 3

It’s definitely a great upgrade for our blog (hooray for less time spent white balancing and worrying about low-light photos – and of course upgraded wider-angle videos are a big plus) and it’s also a nice little upgrade for our family (we shoot a ton of photos & videos of Clara and Burger). It almost makes that whole John-dropped-and-broke-something-again thing seem like a good thing. Right Sherry?

Psst- On another subject entirely, Sherry wants to talk about the finale of Bachelor Pad. So to anyone who saw it… what did you think? Honestly, I wish I had secretly taped Sherry’s reaction.

My husband just bought me a Canon EOS Rebel T3i for my birthday. It has the video function too, so I am in LOVE. We definitely invested a good bit of money into it (and some other accessories) but we know it’ll last us a while. A much needed upgrade from my point and shoot which I always complained about.

Sherry, my husband totally guessed the outcome as soon as we knew which couple was in the running! So no big surprise to me. Can we say your face looked a bit like Chelsey’s?

We have had Nikon cameras for many years, just love the quality. If you travel with it, considering getting a generic strap. You shouldn’t advertise the value of the camera to not so nice people. Enjoy.

And don’t just sling your camera around your side/back with the lens facing away from you. Someone can just steal the lens without you even noticing (Our D3100 wasn’t stolen, but a nice local gave us that tip while we were on our honeymoon!)!

As is the differences between the videos. Muy impresivo. (I know that isn’t real Spanish)

OMG…. I don’t even watch that show, but for some reason I got engrossed in the finale. I knew from the way they were acting and the way they kept promoting a dramatic finale that one of them was going to pick ‘keep’ but I figured it would be her. That guy sure played the game well and fooled everyone, didn’t he? (sorry… didn’t watch the show so don’t remember their names) LOL

Just watching the recaps made me think the show is so deliciously trashy I might have to watch the next season. LOL

That’s a lovely camera, but Bachelor Pad—OMG!!! I can’t believe it! There’s a blog on ew.com that I read that recaps it (worth checking out for more BP discussion). Part of me feels like Nick had a point, but I mostly felt bad for Rachel. And how long do you think she’s going to feel badly about that FOR? Losing out on $125K? And really, she had no way around that—although it would have been awesome if she’d picked “keep”, too, since I’d prefer that all of them got $15-20K vs. Nick getting $250,000 in reward for being a jerk.

We’ve been through the dropsy-time-for-a-new-DSLR routine, too (the culprit will remain nameless, but her name starts with a M and ends in an e). We’re loving our slightly-used-refurbished Canon Rebel T1I (I shout our fist video with it this weekend, you can see it here ), but we’d love to upgrade, too!

That was only the second episode of Bachelor Pad I have seen but it was AMAZING! I think he totally deserved the money and his speech was perfection. According to my sister (she is a big fan of the show), he was spot on that no one cared about him and that his partner was so mean. She is way too much of a drama queen.

Yes please! Can we talk about bachelor pad!! During the previews I kept thinking Rachel was back stage yelling at Micheal, and then that whole situation just kind of blew over so I was confused about who she had been yelling at in the previews. Right towards the end I started hitting my husband’s arm because I was shocked and I kept saying “he’s going to keep the money! he’s going to keep the money! I can’t believe he is doing this to Rachel”. Thanks Sher-dog for wanting to talk about it!

The Bachelor Pad finale was insane!! I made my husband watch it with me and he gets maj points for that. Nick’s speech before he revealed his vote for KEEP was pretty great, and when they kept asking “Why?” I wanted to say, um, did you not hear what he just said? It was a totally baller move and I thought it was great. It takes a lot to shock the pants off Chris Harrison! Felt sorry for Rachel that she left without love or money, but as Kalon said, it’s a game. I couldn’t believe she followed him out and harrassed him all the way to the car! Let it go, sweetie! The montage at the end of all the crap people were saying about him in the interviews was pretty great, too. Well played, ABC!

Even my husband, who rolled his eyes last night when I exclaimed “It’s Bachelor Pad Finale Time!!!!,” and was scolded about 194 times last night alone for talking during it, admitted that it was worth watching just for that ending.

I didn’t notice him before but I like him much better now. As for Blakley and Tony i am shocked. I thought they would be broke up before the limo stopped. We debated between getting that one and the D3200 since our online research said they were very similar in lots of ways. We ended up sticking with the D3200 because it was more similar to what we already knew on the D3000 and supposedly the video is a bit easier to use, but we love hearing that yours is great too! I cheated and looked up what happened in the Bachelor Pad finale before it aired.

Although I gotta say Rachel True was my favorite, I thought of her as America’s Sweetheart. To see Nick tell her all the reasons why he chose “keep” and to have her sit there and lie (she’s a horrible liar).. I gotta give it to the man.

Nick played the game right, fair and square, and with truth and no lies and he won. He has every right to keep that money.

Boy did Rachel have a mental break down though.

I would recommend a lower range DSLR (you can get them for around $450 if you get an older model or check out local camera stores for their clearanced ones). Even the older ones take awesome pics (better than most point & shoot cameras, even the expensive ones) and you can learn how to use it and save up for a more souped up one in a few years if you end up loving it and using it all the time :)

I would read the manual (sounds so obvious, but it took me months to do it!) and just practice practice practice. Some quick pointers that work for us are:

      – we like to shoot in A mode, since some of the things we control are manual but not all of them (it’s more manageable for us)
      – we adjust the exposure if something looks weirdly lit (we make it higher if things look dark and lower if things look too bright)
      – we lower the F-stop if the shutter speed sounds too long (if it looks blurry or doesn’t click super fast, we lower the F-stop to around 3.5 and it speeds up)

      Hope it helps!

a tip: you can schedule your camera on your homeowner policy – there are rules about “business equipment” on the homeowner policy and I’m not sure what type of insurance you have (not asking for it either), but it could be worth looking into… for instances such as these (or camera getting lost/stolen/etc)
    hope the tip wasn’t redundant!

I actually have a policy called a Personal Articles Policy through State Farm. You can list jewelry, cameras, computers, the list really goes on. Might be worth checking out. You can also list your separate lens as well. Even if you don’t have SF for your insurance, you might be able to get just this policy through them (I know you can here in MD, not sure about VA).

It would not longer focus on it’s own. I used it in manual for I can’t even tell you how long (like, two YEARS!) before I got a new prime lens and what do ya know, it worked fine! Do you find the videos easy to upload? My hubby had to convert my D3100 videos on his Mac and it took some time and effort. I was considering a Flip camera for an upcoming vacation, would videos on the Nikon take up too much memory space (despite two memory cards?) What would recommend for vacation between the two?

    Thanks!!

Yes we are having the same issue with hearing the adjusting sounds! We hear that getting an external mic can solve that, so we’ll keep you posted if we crack the code! As for uploading the videos, we didn’t have any issues (but granted we are working directly on a mac). We imported them into iPhoto and just dragged them into Final Cut Pro. Hope it helps!

LOVE nikon! Your next splurge will have to be a lens :) My portrait lens (50mm/1.4) has changed my life…especially with a little one and product photography.

what lenses are you using with your camera? I dropped mine too and had it repaired for the same price and honestly it still acts a bit wonky-smart choice to upgrade!

Thanks Cappy! We use the regular stock lens for most pics and then just toss on the 50mm for Clara/Burger pics if there’s lots of motion/really low light/detail stuff we want to capture.

Go Nikon! I’m a huge Nikon fan – I actually have the D3000 that you managed to kill. I’ve actually straight-up dropped it on the concrete once and it survived – phew! What a gut-wrencher, right?! I do kind of wish that I had gotten one with video capability though – seems like such a nice feature to have it all in one like that! Looking forward to continuing to hear how you guys like it, since, who knows – maybe an upgrade is in our future!

Well I know what I’m putting on my Christmas list haha I have a basic Nikon point and shoot that has some nice features but taking photos in low-light is next to impossible and requires a lot of editing later on. After seeing that video comparison, I think it’s time I put on my big girl pants and plunk down the dough for a DSLR!

Nice upgrade! I had a similar situation happen a few months back. My BF and I were 2 days into our 10 day London/Paris trip and during an ice skating adventure, he kindly volunteered to hold my purse. Well, silly me agreed even though it was his first time ice skating. Long story short, he fell and the purse with my Nikon 3000 in it broke his fall. It still functioned, but the focus and the ISO was totally off so UI upgraded to the Canon D60 when we got back…it’s fantastic! Good luck with yours!

I have the D3000 and you have made me want to upgrade as well, although I don’t think I can justify it because my camera hasn’t had a fatal accident. But I am always having issues with lighting!

I also have Nikon that I love (the D80), and I wanted to make sure you knew about Nikon’s awesome lens warranty. I had an issue with my D80 about 2 years ago when my then 11 month old pulled the camera off of a chair. The camera was having the same auto focus issues you describe, so we called around to a ton of camera places, were considering buying a used one on eBay, etc. But, when my husband was googling, he found out that Nikon has a FIVE YEAR lens warranty. So, even though the issue with my camera was entirely my fault, Nikon fixed the camera lens for FREE (and our local camera store wanted to charge $250 with no guarantee it would work!). Long story short, I hope this helps you or any of your readers! http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16192/~/nikon-warranty-and-product-registration

That’s so awesome! We wished so bad that our lens had broken instead of the camera (a lot less complicated and expensive) but that’s so good to know for the future! Thanks for sharing!

Ha, I was actually coming back to add that anyone wanting to do this should test out the camera body with another lens to make sure it is the lens, not the body that’s broken. Sorry yours was the body, but jealous of the excuse to upgrade. :)

How do you switch to video mode on a camera like that? Can you just hit a button while shooting or do you have to stop and look at the camera and flip a switch?

Yea for the new camera – but I am much more interested in talking about Bachelor Pad! That whole episode was bonkers. I feel bad for Rachel! I really thought she and Michael were into each other and then she essentially finds out she was played. He wanted some showmance and that was it. Then she loses out on the moolah! I think Nick had some valid points about their lack of partnership but I still can’t believe he did that.

I bet Rachel ends up being the next bachelorette.

I don’t claim to be a fashion plate BUT WHAT IN THE WORLD was Jamie wearing?????

    I like the geeky video…

On To BP3. I agree with Nick’s statement as to why he said keep because he did just kid of float along. But there was no real partnership. I feel bad he went back on his word about sharing. I’ve always wanted somebody to say “keep”. Sharing is the easy way. I love the drama of BP.

I’m a Canon girl, but this totally makes me want to look into upgrading mine! I shoot with a Rebel XT and I have the Flip Mino HD for video. Although, if I’m honest, I mostly use my iPhone for photos and videos! It’s not the greatest, but I always have it on me.

Nice! What lens were you using for the pictures in this post? I bought my D3000 around the same time you guys did and fortunately haven’t lost/destroyed/maimed it yet *Knock on wood*. Over the summer, I upgraded from the kit lens to a 50mm and love it, but sometimes wish I had a high-quality lens with a shorter focal length.
