When Liz sent her DIY art project our way we couldn’t wait to share the outcome with you guys. Here’s her letter:
I know that you guys are always whipping up fab DIY art, so I thought your readers might enjoy this little art project that I did. We’ve had a wall in our den that has been blank for over a year. Finally I decided to spend an evening making a fun and funky little art series that has added some much-needed interest to that wall. The best part is that it couldn’t have been easier. If you can wield a paint pen, you can definitely take on this project! In short: I painted the particle board backing that came with my frames (cardboard would also work), used tape to mark where I wanted my scribbles, and grabbed a paint pen to create large white loops. You can check out the whole step-by-step process over on my blog. Hope you like it as much as I do. -Liz
Isn’t that fun? We love that it looks like an upscale textile or pattern thanks to the sophisticated inky blue and the gorgeous gallery framing. We would never have guessed that a paint pen was responsible for such fantastic art. Thanks so much for sending your genius project our way Liz! And we’d love to know if anyone at home is planning to take on Liz’s project for their naked walls.
GORGEOUS!…and what a great way to get the perfect color accent for any room. Love this!
i love this! thanks for sharing your inspiration!
Very clever! Love that color too. Good job :)
That is such a cool idea! I also love how she hung them…with the wires exposed! I will be giving this a shot in my new house!!!
Oooh I love, love, love gallery framing :)
Absolutely love that color!
this is rock star easy! oh my gosh, LOVE it! liz, what a great job you did! hmmmm…casacullen just might be scooping this idea up for some art in our home! thanks YHL for the super easy DIY post – CC
This is so gorgeous!
Now I think I know what will go on the empty wall in my bedroom (:
those look great and go well in the room!
What an awesome (and easy!) project! I love that color too.
Very cool! Love that pop of orange to!!!
Oh, I’ve been looking for a quick DIY art project for my place for a while. Thanks so much for sharing this, I just love it!!
LOVE. Love.
great idea, I love the hints of turquoise.
However, I am more curious about the brown and white geometric rug. Do you have any leads on it, or one like it?
thanks
Hey Emily,
That’s actually the same Pottery Barn Moorish Tile rug that we have in our living room (ours is yellow). They no longer sell them but you can find ’em on ebay when you search the name. Hope it helps!

Turned out cute! Although I have to say that I like how the scribbles are a little “messier” on the chalkboard in her inspiration photo… I think the graphic pattern goes very well in her room, but if I attempt this, I might do a bit more of a *scribble* scribble – you know? :)
That is pretty cool! I think I might try it with either solid colored scrapbook paper or fabric and use a bleach pen instead of a paint pen…
Another weekend project…thanks!
Liz’s art is electric!
As you happen to mention your rug (also especially that it’s not retailed anymore), here is a link I thought would tickle your fancy, particularly as it’s a DIY project!

WOW! I love this project–especially the blue/white contrast!
Absolutely LOVE this! Great way to decorate with chic art on a budget. Totally going to copy. :)
Ack! I’ve been away from my computer all day and I just saw this – thanks for all the kind words, guys! :) Seriously, it’s just about the easiest project ever but I absolutely love it!
P.S. Good call, YHL – that IS the moorish tile rug from PB and I got it on Ebay. :) Although I love Ughsome’s DIY version!
Wow that’s really effective! Looks great.
Fun! I love how the orange & blue pop throughout the room! Simple, easy, and big impact… the best kind of DIY project.
That is just so darn clever. I love how the colours tie in with the cushions on the chair too. Brilliant!
This reminds me of playing with a Spirograph as a kid! Love it!
I love this idea!! I’ve been brainstorming since I saw it yesterday on how I could get this into one of my rooms! Thanks for posting!
I love your site, Sherry and John. I’ve learned so much, and am now wanting to implement a lot of the things I’ve read on here. Both my husband and I are excited to redo some rooms in our home.
I do have a question though. How do you and John settle on an idea when you both like different things for a room? My husband and I get along great – except for room makeovers. We have a hard time combining each others ideas. So, many times our room makeovers look like a jumble of ideas, rather than one cohesive thought.
HELP!!!
Hey Ashley,
After a while you’ll begin to recognize what you both love so it’s easier to bring things in that “speak” to both of you (in our house it’s natural elements like jute, bamboo, etc) with soft gray-blues, tans, and greens- here’s a post all about that. But in the beginning it’s all about learning to resolve decorating disagreements and passionately pitching your point of view so that it’s easily understood and hopefully more well received. Here’s a post all about that: https://www.younghouselove.com/email-answer-have-husband-will-decorate/
Hope it helps!

Very cute- but 3? that’s a little overboard. I know odd numbers are better in design, but I wish it was 3 turquoise art pieces that were slightly different, and part of a series. Otherwise, why 3 of the same taking up all that space?
I love it!! And, the room is great too!
ITA Cara – I would do three different types of scribbles. I love the idea, though!
What a great idea! The price would be just right too!
I just love that pillow on the couch in front of the pictures!! :) Is it a DIY creation or store bought??
Here’s hoping she drops in to answer that soon!

I love that! It looks so perfect. It always amazes me how something that can seem so simple can just jump out and make a room come to life.
Since I’m soooo not artistic, I think this is a great idea! I think it’s something I could handle. Maybe I should bust out my Spirograph! Anyone remember those???
