Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)

- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)

“FURNISH ME!”
•BONUS QUESTION: I love our kitchen table! It was the biggest splurge so far. It is huge and beautiful.
Thanks for the giveaway.
furnish me!
i love an old cabinet i found at my mother-in-laws house. it was painted black and i repainted it teal!
Furnish me!!!
I really like a leather chair and ottoman we scored off of craigslist. It’s unique and small (which is good for my 5’4 frame) and was perfect for our reading nook.
After a little leather cleaning it looked brand new. Love it!
FURNISH ME!
Probably our couches. They were a little but of a splurge, but they’re super comfy and I know will last us a long time.
FURNISH ME! I have a nice Tuscan style sofa table that I have used for a computer desk the last few years. I love the way it looks and takes me back to Italy. For around $100 I thought it was a great buy!
FURNISH ME!
It’s pretty slim pickin’s in our household (for now), but my favorite piece is my fancy college-logo chair that my father gave to me when I graduated. It has a lot of sentimental value for me.
FURNISH ME!
I was given an antique dresser (like my great-great grandmother’s) to use in grad school and it has never been asked back. I need to refinish it a bit, but I love that thing. Can’t find dressers like that anywhere nowadays.
FURNISH ME! We have one hutch that we redid together- we found it at Goodwill for 50 dollars. Other than that our entire house is still hand-me-downs from family.
FURNISH ME! I love the old cedar chest in my living room that belonged to my grandmother!
Furnish me! I love our headboard and bed set
Furnish me! Is it kind of sad I don’t have a piece of furniture so far that I truely love:)
FURNISH ME!!! Is this for real?? You and your giveaway hosts are the best. I would have been happy with just the book!
I love my vintage/old nightstands that I found at the Restore. The detail and color are perfect!
Furnish me!!
We were gifted a beautiful antique dining room table… I saw it in an antique store in Fredricksberg, Texas and about died. Well, one month later it was ours from a dear friend as a “welcome back to Texas” gift. I cherish it not only because it’s gorgeous and one of a kind, but because it reminds me of how blessed we are with such great friends!
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece of furniture is the only one we actually bought new (instead of craigslisting or getting for free from friends and family) – our couch!
FURNISH ME!
I love an old tea cart from my grandmother’s house.
Furnish me!!!
My husband inherited a beautiful oil painting. Being from his family makes it that much more special.
Furnish me! I think the greatest piece I have is my house (great bones) with tons of craftsman woodwork – the furnishings (which I am lacking) are the ‘icing’ on the cake!
Furnish ME! I just recently found a buffet table on craigslist that I am in love with, can’t wait to refinish it!
Furnish me!
I love the toddler bed that my husband and I built for our son. It was our first woodworking project together. We’re so proud of it!
Furnish me!
I don’t know that we currently have any live without pieces…maybe someday
FURNISH ME! We just splurged on a pricey, durable, ours-for-a-long time couch after going through 4 uncomfy couches in 3 years. We’re in love.
Also, amazinnnggg giveaway!
FURNISH ME!
A hope chest made by a great uncle. It’s amazing!
FURNISH ME!
The greatest piece I own would have to be the giant custom-made kitchen island that we scored on Craigslist for a steal. Our kitchen has no drawers, so we needed it badly, and it has been worth every single penny!
Furnish me! My favorite piece is my $250 Hoosier cabinet from Craigslist. It is amazing, and I’m totally in life with it. :-)
FURNISH ME!
When we moved into our house, the previous homeowner left an old hutch that was pretty dated and not really our style. After some TLC and a new paint job, it is my new favorite piece!
FURNISH ME!
I love my dining room table that was my grandmother’s because it holds lots of memories of holiday meals and family poker games.
FURNISH ME! My husband and I went all out on our bed and bought ourselves a king size tempur pedic–hands down the best purchase we ever made!
FURNISH ME!
My favorite piece of furniture is yet to be in my house: A custom window seat – complete with aromatic cedar interior storage – being made by my dad RIGHT NOW. I’m so antsy for it to be finished and in our living room!!
Furnish me! I did splurge on a bedroom set when I got my first job after college!
Furnish me. My dads old nightstand is my favorite piece.
FURNISH ME!!
I am in love with our new sectional. It is so “us” and grown up. It really makes the room!
Furnish me! My favorite piece of furniture is my bed – my husband and I pooled all of our wedding gift money to buy a new bed and mattress and I love them!
Furnish me!!!
I would say the sectional we purchased about a year ago. It’s fits the five of us comfortably & we made sure to invest in a good piece so that it would last.
Furnish me!! I would say the piece I’m most proud of is my son’s dresser that I refinished…it was heinous and now looks very restoration hardware-ish if I do say so meself!
Furnish me! My best pieces are the art hanging in our house. We don’t have great furniture, but we have excellent things to look at.
FURNISH ME!
I’d have to say my daughter’s dresser that I repainted. It seems to have been an old military piece based on the stamp on the back. We bought it from a friend a few years back and I loved the shape of it.
FURNISH ME! I love my grandmother’s old dining room table. I would never pick out a piece like this on my own, but it suits my dining room so well!
FURNISH ME!
My favorite piece in our house in our china cabinet scored at an awesome furniture consignment shop! Was just there yesterday looking for more goodies.
Furnish me. It has to be my tufted headboard and bed from Room & Board. So comfortable.
FURNISH ME!!
My husband and I re-did an old coffee table he’s had since college – turned it into a bench for our daughters room. It turned out great and I can’t help but be proud!
FURNISH ME!
My husband and I LOVE our TV stand from Ikea – it fits the room perfectly and has exactly the right amount of storage!
FURNISH ME! The greatest piece I own is the mid-century credenza we splurged on for our new house.
Holy Bananas, FURNISH ME!!!
My best score is a vintage danish modern sofa handed down to me by my grandma. It has the BEST bones! We got new cushions made for it and it has a new lease on life.
FURNISH ME!!
My favorite piece is an old mirror inherited from my grandma I keep over the fireplace.
FURNISH ME!
My favorite piece is a solid wood lane dresser that I got for $150 from the original owner who’s family was selling extra items to raise money for a children’s hospital.
“FURNISH ME”
Wow…what timing. I just ordered this book on Amazon over the weekend.
Favourite item of furniture at the moment is a toss up between our kitchen dining table (round design in light maple and black) and our master bed base which is nice and high so our two labradors love sleeping underneath it and can’t get on it.
Furnish Me!
I have a lot of pieces I love (many from my grandparents re-invented), my favourite though is the cupboard/buffet I picked up on Craig’s list, painted out a grey/blue, added crystal pulls and is used to store all our toys. With the two big silver leafed mirrors on top when that puppy is closed up you’d never know that it is lego/train/magnatile central!
Furnish me! I need a new dinning room table
FURNISH ME!
Well my grandmother gave me her swivel rocker that my grandfather gave her for their 5th anniversary…it’s rocked many a baby to sleep and the noise it makes when you rock well it makes ME want to fall asleep too!
FURNISH ME!
We were looking for a sofa and loveseat and so I was perusing Etsy one afternoon. I came across a set that I found appealing but figured it was probably located across the country and acquiring it would be nearly impossible and expensive.
But wouldn’t you know it . . . the seller was our neighbor just down the street. I’d definitely consider those pieces our greatest :)
