Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

Furnish Me!!! I just moved into my first big girl apartment, that’s ummm… lacking pretty much everything. Right now, my greatest find was a pair of craptacularly painted campaign chests at a yard sale. I’ve stripped them, sanded them, and, now, in the midst of chalk painting them.

    FURNISH ME!

The greatest piece I have is an antique tallboy dresser I got at a consignment shop for $200, when I moved into my first apartment away from my parents. Its huge, the drawers don’t slide easy, my fiancé hates it – but I LOVE the wood tone, and the curved accents on the front. It’s a forever piece!

FURNISH ME! A year in our first apartment, and we still have very little furniture I could say that I like, much would consider “great”. I suppose the furniture I like the most is the two little bookcases I made to fit in a little nook with shelves perfectly placed to hold our bottles of home-brewed beer…time to go make more furniture!

My favorite piece of furniture is my dining table. I bought from a guy on Craigslist for $50. I stripped about 5 layers of paint off of it and painted it black. It really played up the curves of the table. Best part about the table is its about 120 years old!

My greatest piece of furniture is my sofa. It is the most comfortable, hugest thing in our house and we use it all the time. It’s big enough to double (or triple) as a guest bed and has a mound of pillows that make a great nest for tv watching, reading, sleeping or eating.

    FURNISH ME!

My favorite piece of furniture is the oriental style oval coffee table that my mother in law didn’t want.

She bought it years ago at a yard sale and despite the fact that I’m certain it’s reproduction, the paint is chipping off the chairs, one of the dogs chewed one of the legs (TOTALLY FIXABLE), and the glass top needs to be replaced, it’s definitely going to be one of the feature pieces in the lounge when I’m done renovating!

It’s something that I know I could not afford to purchase myself, and it means a lot to me that I am making the most of what beautiful things I can find.

My husband is out of work, and I was also, for a very long time; now that I’m employed again, every cent we have goes into our snowballing bills. I scrounge around at yard sales for tools and hardware to repair all of the major problems in our house because I desperately want to make it a home.

If you pick me, it would really help in progressing my renovation/decoration!
