Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

    FURNISH ME! :)

My roommate and I just recently found some awesome patterned storage ottomans at a yard sale that give us places to sit and hide all the games/movies/CDs that were cluttering up our room! I’m super happy, because they are so practical and the flower pattern is so fun!

Furnish me! I’m probably in the minority of people who picked out a bed and dresser set as a pre-teen and still love everything about it at 33. My taste has changed so much in the last 20 years, but I chose well for myself for those pieces, so go figure:)

Our best piece of furniture is an enormous mirror with a beautiful leather frame that we inherited from a New England Patriots player my husband was doing handywork for because there was a half-inch long scuff in it. Which we promptly colored in with black sharpie and is no longer visible.

My favorite piece would have to be the garage. After reading your blog, my wife bought DIY tile squares that we then used to cover the cement floor. Also, I have stainless steel shelving and work stations. It is the perfect place to work on my truck and motorcycle.

The greatest piece i currently own is a small 8 x 10 oil painting that i purchased in college at an auction from one of the architectural rendering classes. They started with abstract paintings and it looks like a soft palm leaf shape thats a bright green with a rich turquoise all around. I could totally base a whole bathroom on this small piece someday!

I splurged on two separate pieces of art. One is a giant canvas painted with a lady in a kimono. The other is also a giant canvas with many different colors arranged on a dark background. It’s rather abstract but looks a bit like a flower from across the room.

Haven’t actually made my purchase yet, but I’ve been eyeing some crate and barrel dining chairs (the lyle chair) that I just don’t think i can live without. They ring in at $200 a pop, so I consider that a bit of a splurge! P.s., I think one of the homes you recently crashed had them too, just affirmed my decision that I must have them!

My favorite piece is probably my vintage coffee table. I had been searching for the right one to fill my space with no luck, and then happened upon a treasure at a local antique store. It was long and sleek and mid-century modern: exactly what I had been wanting. :)

For Christmas one year, I received an old chair from the 1940’s that belonged to my husband’s grandmother. It was gorgeous in every way as an original, but to add to the sweetness, my in-laws had it reupholstered in a beautiful deep purple fabric. It’s simply stunning and owns any room that I put it in!

FURNISH ME!! The piece we own that I currently love the most is a dresser I purchased a few years ago. I didn’t want the mirror, but the dresser is beautiful and has wonderful little carvings and is curved and I still look at it and think how much I love it. It could definitely become an heirloom piece which also means a lot to me. Best thing about it: it was at a furniture showroom for $699 and I talked them down to $299!!

We live in an old house, soon to be 100, that had some family pieces when we moved in, and we have added our own pieces, some new, some hand me down, some thrifted. I would love to be able to update what we have, and be able to pass some of our current stuff on to others!! Thanks!
