I’m still in the learning stage when it comes to bargaining, and getting deals, but recently, we got a good deal on our sofa by explaining to the in-store sales person that the price was much cheaper online–in the end, they sold it to us for over $100 less than the online price!

We just bought a new sectional for 85% off – it came from a company that stages houses and didn’t work for them. It’s our first-ever new piece of furniture…

Best deal I ever scored is our Pottery Barn media console. Sold as a floor model, marked down to $350 from $550, which I was thrilled to pay for such a substantial piece of furniture. And I didn’t even have to put anything together!

I think my best ever deal (home related of course) was my first “real” piece of furniture I purchased at the VA Chapter ASID White Elephant Auction where I bought curve front solid wood chest with rough cut granite top for $50!! It’s one of my (and the hubs too!) most favorite pieces of furniture.

I think my next most fave/best deal was buying used Calphalon cookware on craiglist. I wasn’t sold on the cost of the pans, so I thought that I could handle $50 for a second hand set. Love them and maybe someday when I “need” a new set I’ll be willing to pay for the quality. Of course will still have to be purchased on sale and with a coupon.

Actually the spouse got the best deal in my opinion. He scored a fabulous down coat on sale and discounted so many times it was only ten bucks! And it was his size! And he had just walked up to a sales rack and there it was! I hate going shopping with him…

I found four sturdy, vintage wood dining chairs that I LOVE at an antique store years back…for $75 total. The store was closed (permanently, due to recent flooding of the building), but I happened to pull up in front of the store at the same time as the owners, who were willing to let us have a look around. Also snagged a pretty bench that needed a re-glue/paint/re-upholstery for $5 bucks.

The best deals I ever found happened to be years ago for our wedding. We got married in January and had a night wedding filled with candles, white lights, and all things silver. It was so rewarding to have the decorations that we really wanted at ridiculously discounted after christmas prices!! Score!

I a serious bargain shopper, so I feel like I’ve gotten tons of good deals…it makes me wince when I have to buy something full price. Anyways, I think my favorite find was an antique sewing box from Poland (with the stamp on the bottom to prove it!)…they wanted $12 and I got it for $10. Doesn’t sound that great? I saw the exact same box that afternoon at two different antique stores…one wanted $60, the other was asking $90.

A few years ago, I walked into a J.Crew, fully intending to walk straight back to the clearance section and still find nothing within my price range. The sales girl catches my eye and whispers, “Psst…go look at that rack over there…you’ll die of happiness”. She was right! I got a beautiful black dress, originally $175, for $4. That’s right, $4. And it was a size smaller than I normally wear but fit me perfectly, so it also made me feel skinny!

Best deal I scored was on a high top 4 seater table that was out of stock at KMart for my first NYC apt. I wanted a dark color and I only saw light on display but a clerk over heard my request and brought one up from the basement. It was only $180 and I ended up reselling it later but I have fond memories of my 1st NYC table!

My best deal was on an awesome mid century teak credenza. For sale on Craigslist for $50, I contacted the sellers to let them know I was interested but trying to round up a truck for hauling, as my own vehicle wouldn’t work. They offered to give it up for free so I could put the $50 toward renting a truck. Then, a friend happened to show up that weekend with his pickup. I let the couple know that I had found someone to haul so I could pay the $50, but they still insisted on giving me the credenza for free!
