Fab Freebie: Home Depot Gift Card & Tools

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries – see who won below!***

Thanks to random.org’s trusty randomness, we’ve got our winner and it is… Gretchen B (whose husband is “a mastermind with wood. He can make almost anything, at times he has surprised himself at what he canters up.”). That sounds familiar. Congrats Gretchen!

Sorry this post is a few minutes late (380 pages of book proofing = crazytown). But Happy Almost Father’s Day everyone! To help us celebrate, Home Depot is giving away an $100 man card, er, gift card so one lucky reader gets a fast and easy way to show their handy hubby/dad/uncle/brother/grandpa/neighbor how much they care… or how much they really want them to finish that project. Home Depot’s also throwing in a RYOBI 18V ONE+ Lithium Ion Compact Drill Kit (valued at $150) because no tool collection is complete without a power drill and driver. Plus this one weighs less than three pounds and the battery lasts four times longer than your everyday battery. So guys, I’ll guess we’ll all have to come up with another excuse to take a break from our to-do lists.

Home Depot Fathers Day Giveaway

  • PRIZE: A $100 Home Depot gift card and a RYOBI 18V ONE+ Lithium Ion Compact Drill Kit
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what’s the “manliest” quality of the person you’re celebrating this coming weekend. Do you admire your dad’s ability to fix anything? Do you just love seeing the father of your children with a little bit of stubble? Or maybe the way your brother plays with your nieces earns him major guy-points in your book?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, June 13th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Home Depot.

    Happy Father’s Day!

My dad is pretty much the most amazing person I know. Before I was born, he left home at the age of 17 (both of his parents had died by the time he was 13), traveled from New York to Louisiana, became a merchant marine, sailed around the world, and joined the Coast Guard (where he met my mother!)

When I was a kid, he coached roller hockey here in Florida (and helped create the league itself!), took his girl’s team all the way to state, played goalie on his OWN hockey team, and helped build roller coasters at the theme parks (he worked as a hydraulics mechanic for ten years).

When I was about thirteen, he had a pretty bad heart attack due to a faulty valve, iirc (the doctors said his active life was what kept him alive). This led to a triple bypass when he 40. He was in a coma for a month afterwards -we were REALLY worried, ’cause when he awoke-ish (waking up from a coma is NOT what you see in the movies), he wanted to watch Friends instead of the Stanley Cup playoffs!

His health forced his retirement, and he became a stay at home dad. And I haven’t even mentioned he’s an amazing cook and has taught me all I know about cooking, eating properly, and grocery shopping! Plus, he’s a handyman (when I was a senior in high school, he painted my room and completely redid my bathroom in PURPLE, and god love him, only complained once about the resale value dropping, lol), has fixed everything in my old house at least once, and ALWAYS changed the brakes and oil for me when I had a car.

My dad was told over 10 years ago that he probably wouldn’t make it to my sister’s high school graduation. Well, that was two years ago, and he’s still going strong. Some days are a struggle for him, and I’m not gonna lie -his medications and complications are HARD. He struggles with a lot of things, like his memory and stamina. But he has always been there for my sister and I, and has never let us down.

He’s my biggest hero and a complete inspiration -he could have sat on his butt and moped about having to give up his work and his sports (too taxing, the doctors got SOOO mad when he went back to work for a few months after the surgery) which he loved; instead, he found new passions and new outlets for his amazing energy.

So. My dad’s most manly quality: He has never, ever given up.

    HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

My husband crawled up into the attic at 5:00 this morning to rescue a squirrel who had crawled in and gotten stuck. Dark, cramped space, full of fiberglass insulation, pre-coffee. I consider that pretty manly :)

    “HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!”

This is for myself. I’m a single gal and I’ve had to take on the role of “man” numerous times while living alone, not including the many hair brained things I had to do last year after I broke my ankle and couldn’t walk or put weight on it for over 2 months.
