As much as we love holiday lights, indoor lighting is something that you stare at every day of the year. So if you don’t love your lighting situation, this is one way to “dude, get on that” without spending any cash. See, recently we were voted one of Lamps Plus’ top home blogs of 2012 (how flattering!) and it came with a $500 shopping spree prize… but you know we don’t take freebies or swag, so the folks at Lamps Plus kindly agreed that we could pass that $500 credit to one of you! We’ve been fans of theirs for a while now since they seem to have about a million options (their chandeliers even popped up in our book a few times) so this week’s winner should have no trouble finding something to spend their light-loot on if they win.

My favorite Christmas lights are colored lights through a foggy camera lens. Crate and Barrel’s sample pictures for their frames a couple years ago were out-of-focus colored Christmas lights, and I’ve been obsessed since then.

Lamp Me! Growing up I always loved looking at the Christmas tree all lit up with all the other lights out. Haven’t had a Christmas tree recently because my husband refuses to have a real tree due to a spider incident his family had when he was young. I’ve tried an artificial tree but it only looks nice for about 5 minutes until my cats decide to jump into the branches and bend it all out of whack. Lately I’ve been doing with a “chandelier tree” where I just hang some pretty ornaments from the dining room chandelier.

Lamp me! I love having the indoor lights off with the exception of the Christmas tree lights and a fire in the fireplace. Sooooo relaxing. Not relaxing to me? Houses with too many different colored lights outside. White icicle lights, plus some blue on one tree and red on another and then multi-colored strands on a couple shrubs. It just hurts my eyes. But when I was a kid I would have loved it–the cheesier the better!

A few years ago I bought two of those animated light-up deer for the front yard. They were on sale for like $16 each. Well, you get what you pay for because last year one stopped working, and this year neither one works. Wop-womp.
So, my favorite holiday lights are definitely the expensive, branchy-type of kight-up deer (like the $60-80 ones from Home Depot). Maybe next year…
