Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

    FURNISH ME!!!
My favorite piece of furniture is the antique English pub table I found while antiquing with my parents in Alabama while I was in law school (15 years ago)…I loved it but could’t afford it and we couldn’t bring it back in the car. Unbeknownst to me, my dad arranged to have my aunt and uncle purchase the table and bring it to my parents’ house in GA. They then brought it up to me in Macon. I couldn’t believe it!!! it will always be special because my dad though of doing this for me!

FURNISH ME! When I moved to Richmond, my first apartment in the Fan had one tiny closet. My parents graciously gifted me their gorgeous antique armoire — that weighs approximately 150 pounds — to use as extra storage. I’ve moved three times since 2006, and both friends and professional movers have silently cursed me while helping me move the armoire — but I still love it! Definitely my “greatest piece.”

    FURNISH ME!

We don’t have a lot of really cool pieces- as newlyweds, most of our stuff is hand-me-down or cheap starter stuff. But we did get the antique desk that was in my room as a little girl, and I love it!

Furnish me! My favorite piece is a hand-me-down dresser in its original wooden finish. The keyhole in the top drawer makes me think Tinkerbell could pop out of it at any moment.

Furnish Me! I found this dresser on craigslist for $20. It needed to be refinished, so I sanded it down and intended to paint the whole thing a beautiful aqua. As I sanded the top, though, the most beautiful wood grain was revealed, so I stained the top and painted the bottom. I’m very proud of it!

    “FURNISH ME!”

My greatest piece is a Plycraft reclining chair (looks like the Eames lounger) that I got for only $85.

There’s a story that goes with it:

FURNISH ME! My favorite piece is an antique vanity found at a flea market-the top twists 90 degrees and flips open into a full-sized sewing/craft table. Could use some sturdier legs and a good “re-finish.”

    FURNISH ME!

My favorite furniture is in our dining room right now…a beautiful big dining room table to seat everyone when we have BBQ’s, a great old chest that was a hand me down from my dad, a huge mirror we scored at a yardsale for only $20, and curtains to tie the whole room together from BBB. It’s the only room that’s truly “done” in our house and I love it : )

I got a matching set of fantastic mid-century furniture–a big dresser with a mirror, a couple console table thingies, and a dining table and all six chairs–for $400 at an estate sale a few weeks ago. Can’t wait to start refinishing and/or painting them.

My best piece of furniture is our dining room table. It’s beautiful dark wood with a gorgeous intricate pattern. It is bar height, and the leaf is built in, so you can pull apart the table long ways and open it up to become a giant square that seats 8.

Furnish me!! My favorite piece of furniture I have is this mid century record player. I use it as a little table next to one of my doors right now, but I plugged it in one day and it actually does work. I found it for $20 at Goodwill and it actually had some of the original paperwork inside it and its in beautiful shape!
