Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

    FURNISH ME!

The greatest piece I own is a bookcase that belonged to my sister when we were children. I stumbled upon it in our mother’s basement last year and had been on the hunt for a bookcase great bookcase. Needless to say, it was not in great shape. I spent about a week refurbishing it. I first painted it white, but then changed my mind and decided I wanted something more fun. So I turned it into a little teal beauty! I am so proud of it, and the best part is that it was completely free!

    FURNISH ME!!

I love our solid wood, oak kitchen table. It’s actually my parent’s first table that was bought at an arts festival in San Antonio, TX. The table is incredibly sturdy. I hope to pass it down to my daughter someday!

I don’t have a lot of really special pieces, but my 1950-something kitchen table is quirky and fun – and so by default it’s my favorite!

    FURNISH ME!!

My favorite thing I own is a little vintage writing desk that was owned by my husband’s great-grandmother then passed down to his grandma and his mom. I love that it has a family history and that the finish was in rough condition so I was able to sand and paint it (something my mother was always doing to our furniture) without hurting feelings. It feels like such a combination of our families.

FURNISH ME! We bought a coffee table off of Craigslist for $20 — it had been (badly) painted black and was pretty ugly. It was very sturdy, though, and had great legs. So we saw the potential. We stripped and sanded and it turned out beautifully. We discovered there was a great inlaid wood pattern under all that awful black paint.

I’m only just starting to acquire a few grown-up pieces of furniture, but my favorite is probably the old mid-century dresser and nightstand set that my mom used when she was young. I’ve been using it since I was little, too, though we refinished it somewhere along the way.

FURNISH ME… The first piece of furniture my husband and I bought together was an apothecary (wooden side table with lots and lots of drawers. And yes before industrial chic was “in”).

We weren’t even engaged, or living together. But it was kinda at that moment when we went halfsies on this, that the unspoken was a little less unspoken… that we would be spending our futures together.

    FURNISH ME!

Our kitchen table is my fave! There is absolutely nothing special about it – it’s very basic and from Target. But it’s the place where my family gathers together for dinner and that makes it more special than any awesome find at a yard sale or fancy piece of furniture from a high end boutique!

I bought a $10 giant (6’X2′) detailed frame from a tag sale. It had a tacky faux-old sponge paint on it, but it had great character under all those layers of paint. I scraped away the layers of paint and repainted it a bright shiny gold. It went from being old (dirty) and dated to looking new, bright and fun. It’s a great over-the-couch piece.
