Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

FURNISH ME! My living room furnishings need all kinds of help! My favorite pieces are the old iron bed I refinished. It was dented, rusty, and had horse poop up it’s hollow legs. I used Navel jelly and rust primer on the rust, wire bristles on the horse poop, and car putty on the dents. Flat black spray paint with a clear coat finished the job up nice.

    “FURNISH ME!”

    HOLY CRAP!

my pride and joy is my dining set from my grandpa and grandma’s house. Even though it has been years since they passed, when I open the hutch it still smells like their house and brings back lovely memories. Just goes to show that “stuff” can be quite meaningful!

…I’d say my favorite piece of furniture is the first “real” piece of furniture my fiance and I bought for ourselves that wasn’t from Ikea, a recliner. It’s held up and looks nice (and not too recliner-y), and so we’re pretty proud of it!

My fav piece has to be this yummy black leather wing back chair I inherited from my aunt and uncle when they moved. I coveted the thing for years so it made me so happy when I got it. I like to sit in it and pretend that I really enjoy a nice pipe and a glass of scotch, but in reality, I prefer the smell of the beautiful leather.

    FURNISH ME!

My favorite piece of furniture is a family piece from a few generations ago. It’s a sewing machine actually (non-functional), but the kind that drops into a sideboard-looking table. We’ve used the piece as a sideboard/buffet, as a sofa table, as a TV console, and I see it fitting into our master bedroom in the future.

As far as smaller items, I recently acquired 2 sets of these “Snack, Sip, and Smoke” dishes:

    http://compare.ebay.com/like/320943964917?var=lv&ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar

Because who doesn’t want to use 1/8 of their plate as an ashtray?!?

(I’m not selling them, nor did I buy them on ebay, I was given them from a family member)

FURNISH ME! The best piece(s) we own are two retro office chairs we scored (in ugly puke green) at our favorite antique store. We recovered them (and made one mistake that cost us more money) and still came out around $100 each (which is less than we could buy two similar chairs at Target or another relatively cheap store for).

I have two matching chairs that I inherited in college and absolutely love. They were originally from the 40’s, and were used in the university chapel. They were just giving them away one day – out on the street, so I grabbed two. They’ve been moving with me for the last few years, and will be moving into our first house in a few weeks!
