Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

FURNISH ME! I think my best pieces are these two matching black leather chairs that are in my living room. They were hand-me-downs from my in-laws, but they are in fabulous condition. They are very “classic” so I’m pretty convinced I’ll own them forever!

Probably my most cherished piece of furniture is a bench that is inscribed with a dedicated to my mom from the school she worked. After my mom passed away the bench remained at the school and was used for students to read on. When the school closed, I was able to bring the bench home.

FURNISH ME! (please!) My great piece is a matte white ceramic table lamp with hand painted botanical leaves and a wood base. I inherited it from my grandmother- it was the only thing I wanted, and was coveted by all the family members. It appears in all the old photos from the family, and yet it is timeless and modern. I’m not sure if it has any monetary value, and there were many valuable pieces from her estate, but this is the most beautiful piece to me.

The dinning room table my dad made. It looks like the farm tables which are so popular now. I grew up with it in our kitchen. It’s made from wormy chestnut (that’s chestnut boards that worms ate through) that was stored in my granddad’s barn. The worm holes give it so much character though they can be disastrous if something spills. Unfortunately, the boards are splitting and the table is need of repair.

Sadly, the beautiful Mitchell & Gold sofa set my hubby and I bought after we finished grad school was totally trashed by the kids we subsequently had. When we moved, we Craiglisted it to a stylish college student. Beautiful sofa set, but way too big to abscond in the master bedroom where it would be safe.

I’m not really in love with anything in our house right now, but we have this great coffee table that has a top that lifts and can be used as a table (which was our only table for the first year we were married in our tiny place). I’m not in love with the design of it, as it doesn’t fit in well in our current living room, but I’m going to paint it something bright and awesome and then distress it and hopefully I’ll be in love all over again!

My best piece is a handmade mahogany buffet made by my Grandmother’s brother in law for her sister and husband. (confusing enough). This Great Uncle of mine made his living making beautiful custom wood pieces. It’s stunning and I sometimes have to pinch myself when I realize I’ve got it – not another family member.
