Fab Freebies: Them Bones

***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***

Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!

You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.

GoodBonesGreatPieces

So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!)  so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:

  1. The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
  2. The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
  3. A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
  4. The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
  5. A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
  6. The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)

Good Bones Prizes 2

  • PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

I got a great deal on our dining room table from a “tent sale” at a local furniture company. Can’t beat $77 for a table that can seat 8 and the leaf hides inside.

    FURNISH ME!

I think my favorite piece so far is the dining room “set” table and chairs I bought 8 years ago from C&B. It is a folding top which flips open to twice the size, a rich stained brown on top, with distressed black legs. The chairs are distressed black as well. I like like how it has simple lines, but has character.

    FURNISH ME!!!

My favorite piece, by far, is a huge hand-carved dresser from the 1940’s that I bought at an antique store near my home in metro Atlanta. (Queen of Hearts- where your latest house crash poster got her master bath light fixture!) It was painted turquoise and the man who sold it to me scoffed that the color is not from the “correct period.” I smiled, said I thought it was perfect, and it now houses all of our dvds, Wii games, and such and is the perfect perch for our television!

FURNISH ME! I love a set of midcentury side chairs that I just got from my dad. My parents had them from before I was born and prior to that they were my grandparents. I just got them recovered and saved a ton by having the state prison do it (2 chairs for just under 300 versus over 900)!

FURNISH ME! My favorite piece is one I splurged on (although I did buy it on sale as the floor model). It is the Crate & Barrel Petrie sofa and chair in white. I love the shape – they are crazy comfortable – and I can change the look completely by just swapping some pillows and blankets!

    FURNISH ME!

I would say my coffee table that I upcycled is my greatest piece! It’s kidney shaped and used to be beige with a mirror top. I painted it black, removed the mirror (which had been cracked) and then tiled it with hundreds of red shaded 1in tiles with some gold pieces mixed in. It was a long process and took hundreds of tiles but it’s my DIY pride and joy :)

The greatest piece I own will be the Hazel settee that I’m about to own! But honestly, we don’t have any great furniture…blah blah. I can’t wait until our kids are a little more grown and I’m able to get nicer pieces. I’ve been on the lookout for a great dresser and some console tables that I love and that are good quality for awhile now!

Furnish Me! My current favorite piece in our house is an antique buffet that my husband refinished so that we can use it as a changing table in our due-in-a-month little one’s nursery. I love that it’s so not a piece of baby furniture, and yet it’s completely perfect for its new function. And pretty, too. That part doesn’t hurt.
